ASAM Criteria 4th Edition Utilization Management Education

The ASAM Utilization Management Course, 4th Edition, is designed to help managed care payers develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition, and their role in constructing a full range of services for patients with substance use disorders (SUD).

States and payers are adopting the 4th Edition at varying rates, and certain jurisdictions might still be in the process of implementing older versions of The ASAM Criteria textbook. If you're unsure whether you should complete the 3rd or 4th Edition ASAM Criteria Foundations course, we recommend reaching out to your employer or contacting your state representatives for guidance.

What you'll learn

After taking this course, learners will be able to:

  • Examine the guiding principles of The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition, and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation.
  • Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions, as defined in The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition.
  • Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments in accordance with The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition, to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate.
  • Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition, to drive ongoing evidence-based care.
  • Implement a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers using common terminology of The ASAM Criteria, 4th Edition, to ensure patient-centered care.

    Overview

    This 5-hour online course is designed to help managed behavioral health organizations (MBHO) and managed care payers to develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and their role in constructing a full range of services for patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring disorders.

    Through interactive and case-based activities, the course covers the process of conducting objective clinical case reviews, evaluating treatment plans, and determining the appropriate level of care in accordance with the 4th Edition of The ASAM Criteria. The course also explores the importance of implementing a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers to ensure patient-centered care. 

    The target audience for this course includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced counselors, social workers, administrators, clinical staff, medical students, and any other healthcare professional who works with individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.

    Learning Objectives: 

      • Examine the payers role in the system-wide implementation of The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition.  
      • Evaluate patient risk ratings across ASAM Criteria subdimensions based on the Dimensional Admission Criteria, as defined in The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition. 
      • Evaluate treatment plans and treatment plan updates to determine if the program is effectively supporting the member in addressing their Dimensional Drivers as defined by The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition.
      • Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and concurrent reviews) based on The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition, to drive ongoing evidence-based care. 
      • Evaluate requests for continued service and level of care transitions based on the Continued Service and Transition Criteria, as defined in The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition.  
      • Evaluate treatment plans and treatment plan updates to determine if the program is effectively supporting the member to make address their Dimensional Drivers as defined by The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition.  
      • Evaluate transition plans based on The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition, to support effective transitions to less intensive levels of care.  
      • Implement a collaborative process between payers, treatment providers, and policymakers using The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition, as a shared language to support mutual understanding and enhanced accountability to promote patient-centered care. 
      • Examine implementation challenges and develop strategies to provide appropriate treatment for persons with SUDs. 
      • Understand what tools and resources are available to support effective system-wide implementation of The ASAM Criteria.

    Brian Hurley

    MD, MBA, DFASAM

    Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, DFASAM is an addiction physician and the Director of Addiction Medicine for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Brian is currently a Director at Large for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and will assume the position of President-Elect this April 2021. He co-chairs the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ Substance Use Disorders Workgroup and the SafeMedLA Medications for Addiction Treatment Action Team, and is the Clinical Director of the Addiction Treatment Starts Here programs through the Center for Care Innovations, focused on increasing the delivery of Medications for Addiction Treatment in California’s community health centers. He is the PI of two MAT Access Points projects funded by the Sierra Health Foundation, a co-PI of a TRDRP funded smoking cessation implementation project, and a co-investigator on NIDA, NIAAA, and PCORI funded addiction related implementation science grants managed through RAND. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and regularly conducts motivational interviewing trainings throughout the United States. He is a Volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor of Addiction Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He additionally serves on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s Addiction Psychiatry examination writing committee.

     Brian completed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and was previously a UCLA - Veterans Administration National Quality Scholar at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. He completed a fellowship program in addiction psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine. He completed residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, where he was Chief Resident in Addiction Psychiatry. Brian is a former National President of the American Medical Student Association.

    Joel V. Brill

    MD

    Joel V. Brill, MD FACP is an executive clinician with over 30 years of experience providing strategic leadership and medical oversight to large data-driven health organizations. Dr. Brill is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and works extensively with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) on coding, coverage and reimbursement issues, and co-Chaired the Part D medication measures Technical Expert Panel for CMS.  Dr. Brill is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Midwestern University.  He participates in the CPT Editorial Panel and the AMA RBRVS Update Committee (RUC) and has introduced over 200 HCPCS and CPT coding proposals.  He has published extensively on episode and bundled payment methodologies and has developed and submitted advanced payment models to the HHS Physician Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee for consideration under MACRA.

    Christine R. Mulford

    RN, MSN, FNP-BC

    Christine Mulford, RN, MSN, FNP-BC is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who brings more than two decades of clinical practice and leadership to the field of addiction medicine. She has practiced at all levels of outpatient care, including telemedicine. Additionally, she has directed an inpatient medically managed withdrawal management program. Her special interests are meeting the unique treatment needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and reducing stigma for all individuals with substance use disorders.

    Ms. Mulford earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has served as a guest lecturer for Arizona State University Project Echo. At ASAM, she holds positions on The ASAM Criteria Education Planning Committee as well as the ASAM CONTINUUM sub-committee. She has been an ASAM Faculty member since 2019.
