About this Course

ASAM Criteria Foundations Course

This 8-hour course workshops content which is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have successfully completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

The ASAM Criteria Foundations Course, our current education offering, is based on the ASAM Criteria Textbook, Third Edition. We are working to develop an updated course based on the just released the ASAM Criteria Fourth Edition, which is expected to be available in Q1 2024. Different states and payers are implementing the Fourth Edition at different rates, and different jurisdictions may currently be implementing older versions of the ASAM Criteria Textbook.  While there are some significant changes in the 4th Edition, the essential concepts from the 3rd Edition have not changed and still provide a fundamental basis for the assessment and continuing care of individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
