Maintaining Certification

Learn about getting certified in Addiction Medicine and about maintaining your credentials in addiction medicine or other primary specialties.

About Maintenance of Certification

Physicians must maintain certification by meeting educational requirements for the assessment of continuing competencies through a program called Maintenance of Certification (MOC), Continuing Certification Program (CCP) or Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC). The purpose of MOC/CCP/OCC is to ensure that physicians adhere to the highest standards in medicine and pursue excellence in all areas of care and practice improvement.

Will my Credit Count?

Your credit will count if you're certified through the following boards:

  • American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)
  • American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
  • American Board of Family Physicians (ABFM)
  • American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
  • American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)
  • American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
  • American Board of Surgery (ABS)
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
How are Credits Reported?
  • ASAM reports MOC Points to these boards the first week of the month following activity completion and credit claim.
For Example: If you completed an activity and claimed credit for it in June, your MOC Points will by reported the first week of July.
  • Credits claimed during December are reported by the second Friday in January.
Reporting in January will not affect your certification status as long as your courses are complete and your credit has been claimed on December 31.
  • To report your MOC Points to these boards, ASAM must have your correct board ID number and birthdate on file. Please make sure your certification ID numbers and birthdate are accurate in your ASAM profile.
