The course offers 15 hours of on-demand lectures recorded from the ASAM 2025 Review Course in Addiction Medicine on Wednesday, July 23 to Thursday, July 24, 2025. The session topics are mapped to the addiction medicine exam blueprints and feature a highly accomplished group of faculty.
The ASAM Review Course in Addiction Medicine is the essential and foundational course for advanced practice providers who are preparing for the addiction medicine exam or for a career in addiction medicine. With a comprehensive curriculum, covering everything from neurobiology and pharmacology to individual substances and ethical concerns, the course offers a streamlined overview of addiction medicine delivered by an outstanding faculty lineup.
The target audience for this introductory and intermediate-level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This activity addresses all 6 ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting
Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals
Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders
Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient
Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse

Paul Earley

Dr. Paul Earley has been an Addiction Medicine Physician for 36 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment and treatment of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long-term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM and has been on the board of ASAM for over 20 years in several capacities. He has been the Medical Director of two nationally acclaimed addiction programs specializing in healthcare professionals who suffer from addiction illnesses. Currently, Dr. Earley is the Medical Director of the Georgia Professionals Health Program, Inc., the Physicians Health Program (PHP) for the state of Georgia in the U.S. With Earley Consultancy, LLC, he works with numerous treatment facilities, providing training in cohesive care, treatment effectiveness, and staff development.

Edwin Salsitz
MD, DFASAM
Dr. Edwin A. Salsitz has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel , Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee.
Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

Ricardo Restrepo
MD, MPH
Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

Jonathan Avery
MD
Jonathan Avery, MD is currently the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Avery teaches addiction psychiatry to the Weill Cornell medical students and residents of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been published on a broad variety of topics in psychiatry, including papers on subjects ranging from clinician attitudes towards patients to how to use buprenorphine. He is the founder of the Addiction Stigma Institute that studies stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders and creates novel interventions to improve these stigmatizing attitudes. He was on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor of the books Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. He has won numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

Leslie Hayes, MD

Dr. Leslie Hayes, MD, works for El Centro Family Health in Espanola, NM. She is board-certified in both addiction and family medicine. While Dr. Hayes enjoys all aspects of family medicine, her particular passion is taking care of people with opioid use disorder. She especially enjoys working with pregnant women and new mothers who have had drug problems and works hard to make sure that they and their babies receive compassionate and appropriate medical care. Eve Lasswell, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who treats adults with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Dr. Lasswell is part of UC San Diego Health's Addiction Recovery and Treatment Services, which uses a harm-reduction approach to provide care for all stages of recovery from substance use disorders. She treats patients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders and helps adults recover from addiction by encouraging behaviors that build wellness and emotional resilience.
In addition, she has experience helping people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, as well as concerns related to role transitions and interpersonal relationships.

Dr. Kan is an active member of the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM). CSAM is a physician organization dedicated to improving the treatment of substance use disorders. MD, DFASAM
David Galbis-Reig MD, FASAM received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 1999. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2004. He is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He has been the Director of Medical Services on the Inpatient Mental Health and Addiction Unit at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints since 2005 in which capacity he has passionately advocated for appropriate medical treatment of patients with mental health and addictive diseases. Dr. Galbis-Reig is currently also involved in numerous educational activities to decrease prescription drug abuse and decrease the burden of addiction to opioids in Racine and Kenosha Counties. He is an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the current secretary of the Wisconsin Society of Addiction Medicine (WiSAM), and a contributing author to the recently published ASAM white paper on the science of drug testing. He is a member of the Wisconsin Marijuana Prevention Ad-Hoc Committee of the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA). He is also an active member of the Wisconsin Medical Society and a member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation.

R. Jeffrey Goldsmith
MD, DLFAPA, DFASAM
Dr. Goldsmith began his addiction medicine career in 1974 as a medical student, learning about the disease of alcoholism as a counselor for one of the Department of Transportation's Alcohol Safety Action Projects. He received his medical training and finished his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Goldsmith worked in the VA for 15 years, splitting his time between Dual Diagnosis Services, psychiatric consultations and research with the Clinical Trials Network. He was an active member of Cincinnati's NIDA research group, and Cincinnati's principal investigator for its pivotal study of buprenorphine/naloxone for opiate addiction. Dr Goldsmith also created an integrated Primary Care Mental Health program with the director of Primary Care, initiated in 2007 and still active. Prior to retiring, Dr. Goldsmith worked in the VA Buprenorphine Treatment Clinic.
In 1994, Dr. Goldsmith developed an ACGME accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship and the following year was funded by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs for a two year Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He holds the title of Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. He was addiction fellowship director from 1989 to 2007 and continues to teach in addiction fellowships: Psychiatry and ABAM.
Dr. Goldsmith joined ASAM in 1984, became ASAM certified in 1986 and got his CAQ in Addiction Psychiatry in 1994. He has been on the CME committee since then, and was its chair for nine years from 2000-2009. Dr Goldsmith was President of ASAM 2015-2017.

Soumya Pandalai
MD, FACP, DFASAM
Dr. Soumya L. Pandalai is a board certified physician in the field of Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She currently works at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) in Phoenix, Arizona as a specialist in Addiction Medicine and provides both inpatient consultation services and outpatient treatmentr to persons with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Dr. Pandalai enjoys the clinical practice of Addiction Medicine and finds the neuroscience of addiction to be intellectually stimulating and challenging to observe the health-effects that can result from various aspects of human behavior. It is also immensely rewarding to connect with patients at different stages of their recovery process and help them along their path toward healing. She hopes to inspire people to view addiction from a different lens and apply principles of substance use and reward pathways to general aspects of human motivation and other medical illnesses. Dr. Pandalai is proud and grateful to work with an interdisciplinary team of hospital staff, social workers, counselors and other medical providers to create a more inclusive and health-focused model for substance use treatment, chronic pain and use of treatment options like tele-health to advance the care of vulnerable patient populations.

Hiroko Furo
MD, PhD, MA, MS, MSES, MRO, FASAM
Dr. Hiroko Furo is an Associate Professor ofAddiction Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. She is board-certified inAddiction Medicine, Occupational Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine, and isboard-eligible in Clinical Informatics. During her fellowship in MedicalToxicology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, she developed a strong interestin addiction medicine. She holds a PhD in Sociolinguistics from Georgetown Universityand an MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Dr. Furo’s clinical experience spans opioidtreatment programs, outpatient addiction care, emergency department/inpatientconsultation, and residential detox settings. Her research focuses on urinedrug testing, social determinants of health, and research informatics. Shehas authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and presentedher research at various scientific conferences. She also serves asaffiliated faculty in Addiction Medicine at SUNY Buffalo.

Julia Hunter
MD, MPH, FASAM
Dr. Hunter is the Medical Director of Addiction Medicine at United Health Services Hospitals, Inc. (UHS). Under her leadership, her department embraces evidence-based practices and harm reduction principles in its low-threshold buprenorphine program, opioid treatment program, and 20-bed inpatient unit. She teaches residents at UHS in psychiatry, family medicine, and internal medicine, and is the methadone site director for Geisinger’s addiction medicine fellowship. She is pleased to participate in the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s Board Exam Study Tool Subcommittee, the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute Substance Use Guidelines Committee, the New York State Advisory Group on Hepatitis C Treatment Among People Who Inject Drugs, and the New York State Department of Health’s Buprenorphine Working Group.
She is board certified in addiction and family medicine. She graduated from Harvard University with honors with a bachelor’s in history, and graduated from Dartmouth College with a master of public health. After attending SUNY Upstate Medical University, she completed her family medicine residency at the University of Vermont and her addiction medicine fellowship at Summa Health.
