Overview

This 8-hour virtual live course expands on the content discussed within the ASAM Criteria One-Day Foundations course and provides an in-depth understanding of developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating initial reviews and continued stay reviews, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment.  

The ASAM Criteria Skill Building Course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and explore their role in constructing a full range of services for the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). The Course builds on the foundational concepts of The ASAM Criteria that will offer practical guidelines to drive objective decision making and ensure fidelity to The ASAM Criteria. Using a practical and case-based approach, participants will explore important considerations in developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating progress versus nonprogress in treatment, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment. Further, the training will provide tools and resources to equip healthcare providers to work effectively in managed care settings and explore how case shaping can drive patients' overall quality of care.

The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Examine the guiding principles of the ASAM Criteria and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation
2. Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions based on imminent danger and immediate needs, as defined in the ASAM Criteria
3. Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate in accordance with the ASAM Criteria
4. Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on the ASAM Criteria to drive ongoing evidence-based care
5. Implement a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers using common terminology of the ASAM Criteria to ensure patient-centered care
6. Examine implementation challenges and develop strategies to provide appropriate treatment for patients with SUDs

Overview

This 8-hour virtual live course is the recommended first step to understanding the ASAM Criteria and covers developing patient-centered service plans as well as making objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions. 

The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

The target audience for this beginner, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

ASAM Tobacco Use Disorder - Treatment and Prevention Course

Overview

Tobacco addiction kills more Americans annually (~430,000) than all other addictions, HIV, HCV, murders, MVAs, and suicides combined. Most people with substance use disorders die from tobacco-related diseases, but the common myth is that this addiction can't be treated at the same time as other substance use disorders. This course will focus on the importance of integrating tobacco cessation treatment either simultaneously or sequentially during addiction treatment. Learners will explore how to provide effective nicotine withdrawal management when patients are admitted to inpatient treatment centers. The skills include assessing levels of dependence, matching evidence-based pharmacological and behavioral support to help patients achieve lasting remission without compromising their recovery journey, and possibly enhancing recovery.  

The target audience for this course is healthcare providers and clinicians who seek practical tools, resources, and effective interventions for treating patients with tobacco use disorder during addiction treatment.

• Select the optimal first-line treatment plan for those with concurrent tobacco use disorder and other addictions.

Overview

This 6-hour, live course provides the education needed for prescribing clinicians to strengthen skills in partnering with treatment court and advocating for patients who are involved in treatment court. The course will include didactive presentations, small group discussions, FAQs, and challenging case studies. 

ASAM is partnering with All Rise through an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) grant initiative to allow medical providers active with and new to the drug treatment court field access to training to help guide them in successful integration of services for individuals with substance use disorders involved in the justice system.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who practice addiction medicine and interact with treatment courts and other aspects of the justice system. 

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Based Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism and Systems-based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Describe ways to reduce stigma against people with substance use disorders, including the use of accurate terminology. 
2. Explain the role of timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment for clients/participants first engaging in treatment courts.
3. Define addiction as a chronic and manageable disease.

Overview

This 6-hour virtual-live workshop will increase learners' skills in treating pain and addiction through dynamic and interactive learning methods and is designed for those with some experience in pain and addiction to apply essential treatment skills to their practice.

The ASAM Pain & Addiction: Applied Skills Workshop is a new, intermediate-level activity. This virtual workshop is designed to increase learners' skills in treating pain and addiction. The course will be a dynamic and interactive opportunity for those who have some experience in pain and addiction to apply essential treatment skills to their practice. This live virtual workshop is designed to be energetic and interactive. Sessions throughout the workshop will include lecture, demonstrations of skills, and skill-building.

The target audience for this intermediate-level activity includes: physicians, nurses, and physicians assistants with some experience treating pain and addiction and who are at an intermediate level.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Compare validated pain and addiction screening tools and create a plan to integrate them into workflows
2. Create trauma-informed, patient-centered treatment plans exemplifying SMART goals
3. Apply principles of motivational interviewing and brief counseling to engage patients in their treatment of pain and addiction
4. Create a script that engages the patient in a deeper understanding of chronic pain and substance use disorders as neurobiological conditions that require a multidisciplinary approach emphasizing longitudinal care interventions and self-care techniques
5. Apply pharmacologic techniques such as buprenorphine induction, opioid tapering, and non-opioid medication management
6. Select patient-centered non-pharmacologic pain and addiction treatment methods consistent with community-based resources

ASAM Criteria One-Day Foundations Course

Overview

This 8-hour virtual live course is the recommended first step to understanding the ASAM Criteria and covers developing patient-centered service plans as well as making objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions. 

The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

The target audience for this beginner, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria
2. Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment

Overview

This 6-hour, live course will be held as a pre-course to the 2023 WISAM Annual Conference that provides the education needed for prescribing clinicians to strengthen skills in partnering with treatment court and advocating for patients who are involved in treatment court. The course will include didactive presentations, small group discussions, FAQs, and challenging case studies. 

ASAM is partnering with All Rise through an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) grant initiative to allow medical providers active with and new to the drug treatment court field access to training to help guide them in successful integration of services for individuals with substance use disorders involved in the justice system.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who practice addiction medicine and interact with treatment courts and other aspects of the justice system. 

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Based Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism and Systems-based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:
