The course offers 16 hours of on-demand lectures recorded from the ASAM 2023 Review Course in Addiction Medicine on Thursday, July 27, 2023 and Friday, July 28, 2023. The session topics are mapped to the addiction medicine exam blueprints and feature an outstanding lineup of faculty.
The ASAM Review Course in Addiction Medicine is the essential and foundational course for physicians who are preparing for the addiction medicine exam or for a career in addiction medicine. With a comprehensive curriculum, covering everything from neurobiology and pharmacology to individual substances and ethical concerns, the course offers a streamlined overview of addiction medicine delivered by an outstanding faculty lineup.
The target audience for this introductory and intermediate-level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This activity addresses all 6 ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting
Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals
Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders
Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient
Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse

Michael Baumann, PhD
Chief, Designer Drug Research Unit

Michael H. Baumann, Ph.D., is a Staff Scientist and Facility Head at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), in Baltimore, MD. For more than 30 years, his research team has investigated the biological effects of therapeutic and abused drugs in preclinical laboratory models. Dr. Baumann has co-authored more than 200 scientific publications about his research findings and serves on the editorial board for several pharmacology journals. In 2012, he established the Designer Drug Research Unit (DDRU), the goal of which is to collect, analyze, and disseminate the most up-to-date information about the pharmacology and toxicology of newly emerging synthetic drugs of abuse, now known as new psychoactive substances (NPS). Working with partner organizations such as the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), Dr. Baumann is kept informed about trends in NPS misuse. His research team has characterized the molecular mechanism of action for many of the “bath salts” cathinones and “spice/K2” cannabinoids. Ongoing research is aimed at determining the biological effects of emerging synthetic stimulants, cannabinoids, and opioids which pose serious public health risks.
Carolyn Warner-Greer, MD, FACOG, FASAM

Carolyn Warner-Greer, MD, FASAM is originally from Portland, Oregon. She is a graduate of Ball State University and Indiana University School of Medicine. She is board certified in obstetrics-gynecology and addiction medicine and currently is a physician at the Bowen Center and the medical director of the Bowen Recovery Center. She is the Immediate-Past President of the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and speaks frequently on all topics of medical treatment of mental health and addiction recovery. She participates in Allen County Overdose Fatality Review Team, Indiana University School of Medicine Project ECHO as well as the Maternal Child Substance Use Disorder Network. She has worked extensively in forensic diversion as well as women’s health care and preventative community programming. She lives in Fort Wayne with her husband, Jerry, and their four children.
Annie Levesque
MD, MSc
Annie Levesque, MD, MSc is the Medical Director of the Opioid Treatment Program at the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West. She is also the Associate Director of the Fellowship in Addiction Medicine Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Montreal, Dr. Levesque completed a Family Medicine and a Clinician-Scholar residency program at the University of Montreal, an Addiction Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai West Hospital and a Masters in Experimental Medicine at McGill University

Lewis Nelson

Lewis Nelson, MD, FACEP, FACMT, FASAM is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a Past-President of the American College of Medical Toxicology. He remains actively involved with the CDC, FDA, DHS, and several professional medical organizations, including ASAM. Dr. Nelson is an editor of the textbook Goldfrank’s Toxicologic Emergencies and on the editorial boards of several journal.

Mashal Khan, MD

Dr. Mashal Khan is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine-NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He attended the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University and trained at Maimonides Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Following his residency training, he completed a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Khan works along with the the Liver transplant team and focuses on improving outcomes for individuals with alcohol use disorder and related liver disease.
Edwin Salsitz
MD, DFASAM
Dr. Edwin A. Salsitz has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel , Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee.
Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

Ricardo Restrepo
MD, MPH
Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

Carla Marienfeld
MD, DFAPA, FASAM
Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Michael Fingerhood

Michael Fingerhood, MD, FACP, DFASAM is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health, and Chief of the Division of Addiction Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Johns Hopkins University and his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training and a chief resident year at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The mission of his career has been to promote and improve the provision of medical care to patients with substance use disorder, including the treatment of HIV and hepatitis C, with the development, maintenance and evaluation of innovative programs related to the care of these individuals. Dr. Fingerhood created the Comprehensive Care Practice in 1994, a primary care practice largely devoted to providing care to individuals with substance use disorder. The practice has been innovative in integrating buprenorphine treatment into the primary care setting for over 650 individuals. He has also co-created novel buprenorphine treatment programs at a community center, at a church and in a mobile van outside the Baltimore detention center. He is co-author of the ASAM Handbook of Addiction Medicine.

Leslie Hayes, MD
Family Physician

Dr. Leslie Hayes, MD, works for El Centro Family Health in Espanola, NM. She is board-certified in both addiction and family medicine. While Dr. Hayes enjoys all aspects of family medicine, her particular passion is taking care of people with opioid use disorder. She especially enjoys working with pregnant women and new mothers who have had drug problems and works hard to make sure that they and their babies receive compassionate and appropriate medical care. She got much of her training in substance use disorders through Project ECHO and now considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to give back to Project ECHO, and she now provides training for other providers around the state of New Mexico and nationally in substance use disorder and use of buprenorphine. She recently started an ECHO in her own organization with the goal of getting 90% of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine and provide compassionate, evidence-based care for Substance Use Disorder. She was named a White House Champion of Change in April of 2016 for her work with substance use disorder and pregnancy. Her work was also featured in The Providers, an award-winning documentary about rural health care.

Paul Earley

Dr. Paul Earley has been an Addiction Medicine Physician for 36 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment and treatment of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long-term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM and has been on the board of ASAM for over 20 years in several capacities. He has been the Medical Director of two nationally acclaimed addiction programs specializing in healthcare professionals who suffer from addiction illnesses. Currently, Dr. Earley is the Medical Director of the Georgia Professionals Health Program, Inc., the Physicians Health Program (PHP) for the state of Georgia in the U.S. With Earley Consultancy, LLC, he works with numerous treatment facilities, providing training in cohesive care, treatment effectiveness, and staff development.

Jonathan Avery
MD
Jonathan Avery, MD is currently the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Avery teaches addiction psychiatry to the Weill Cornell medical students and residents of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been published on a broad variety of topics in psychiatry, including papers on subjects ranging from clinician attitudes towards patients to how to use buprenorphine. He is the founder of the Addiction Stigma Institute that studies stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders and creates novel interventions to improve these stigmatizing attitudes. He was on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor of the books Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. He has won numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

Petros Levounis
MD, MA, DFASAM
Petros Levounis, MD, MA, DFASAM serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Professional Development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Levounis came to Rutgers from Columbia University where he served as director of the Addiction Institute of New York from 2002 to 2013.
Dr. Levounis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University where he studied chemistry and biophysics before receiving his medical education at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he researched the effects of social class on patient-physician relationships in Oxford, England, and received an MA degree in sociology from Stanford. In 1994, he moved to New York City to train in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia earning the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award and went on to complete his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at New York University.
Dr. Levounis has written numerous articles, monographs, and book chapters; has lectured extensively on addiction topics throughout the United States and abroad; and has been interviewed by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, The Martha Stewart Radio Show, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.
Dr. Levounis has served on the boards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and from 2005 to 2009 chaired the national Committee on Addiction Treatment of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Levounis is a Betty Ford Scholar, a recipient of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists’ Distinguished Service Award and the ASAM Educator of the Year Award, and a distinguished fellow of the APA and ASAM. In 2017, he was elected as an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Levounis has published thirteen books including the self-help paperback “Sober Siblings: How to Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister—and Not Lose Yourself,” the textbook of “Substance Dependence and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders,” “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice,” “The Behavioral Addictions,” “Becoming Mindful,” “Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health,” and “Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder,” now in its second edition. Dr. Levounis is currently working on the first textbook of Technological Addictions. His books have been translated into French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Levounis is married to actor Lukas Hassel and lives in New York City.

Ricardo Restrepo
MD, MPH
Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

Dr. Edwin Salsitz has been an attending physician at Mt. Sinai Beth Israel, Division of Chemical Dependency, in New York City since 1983, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.

Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

Overview
This 45-minute, on-demand session from the ASAM 2023 Review Course provides an overview of the epidemiology of cannabis use disorder, the physiologic effects of cannabis, how to identify cannabis use disorder, and available treatment options.
Cannabis is becoming more prevalent as states enact new legislation surrounding legal use. This session starts with a broad overview of the epidemiology of cannabis use disorder and the changes in public perception of cannabis use. Dr. Mashal Khan is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine-NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He attended the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University and trained at Maimonides Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Following his residency training, he completed a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Khan works along with the the Liver transplant team and focuses on improving outcomes for individuals with alcohol use disorder and related liver disease.

Jonathan Avery
MD
Jonathan Avery, MD is currently the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Avery teaches addiction psychiatry to the Weill Cornell medical students and residents of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been published on a broad variety of topics in psychiatry, including papers on subjects ranging from clinician attitudes towards patients to how to use buprenorphine. He is the founder of the Addiction Stigma Institute that studies stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders and creates novel interventions to improve these stigmatizing attitudes. He was on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor of the books Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. He has won numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

Michael H. Baumann, PhD is a Staff Scientist and Chief of the Designer Drug Research Unit (DDRU), at the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Baltimore, Maryland. The DDRU collects, analyzes and disseminates the most up-to-date information about the pharmacology and toxicology of newly-emerging synthetic drugs of abuse (i.e., designer drugs), more formally known as new psychoactive substances (NPS). Working with partner organizations such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS), Dr. Baumann is kept informed about trends in the misuse of NPS. The DDRU has characterized the molecular mechanism of action and pharmacological effects for a diversity of NPS, including “bath salts” (synthetic stimulants), “spice” (synthetic cannabinoids) and synthetic opioids. Findings from the DDRU inform law enforcement personnel, health care workers, clinical toxicologists, forensic scientists, basic researchers, and policymakers who are involved in responding to the global spread of NPS and the associated public health risks.

All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to education@asam.org within 90 days of purchase. Those requesting refunds for courses that are in progress will receive partial refunds or e-Learning Center credit.

Annie Levesque, MD, MSc is the Medical Director of the Opioid Treatment Program at the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West. She is also the Associate Director of the Fellowship in Addiction Medicine Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Montreal, Dr. Levesque completed a Family Medicine and a Clinician-Scholar residency program at the University of Montreal, an Addiction Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai West Hospital and a Masters in Experimental Medicine at McGill University
