This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference explores replicable community-based models of care that leverage existing infrastructure in transformative ways to address the treatment gap.
Opening General Session - Transforming Care through Innovative Community-Based Models
Recorded: Thursday, April 24, 2025 to Sunday, April 27, 2025 On-Demand Session
Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference explores replicable community-based models of care that leverage existing infrastructure in transformative ways to address the treatment gap.
While the science and practice of addiction medicine has exponentially expanded over the last few decades, it is estimated that only 10% of individuals with substance use disorders receive any form of treatment in the United States. Challenges from stigma to insufficient treatment access and screening practices have created a widening treatment gap that cannot be addressed by any one approach or model alone. This opening session will explore replicable community-based models of care that leverage existing infrastructure in transformative ways to address the treatment gap. Highlighting creative models across the nation, attendees will be inspired to consider how practical changes to current systems can create meaningful impact and expand access to care.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies:Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice, Interpersonal Communication and Skills, Professionalism.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Describe the challenges and critical considerations in establishing a mobile medical unit for substance use disorder treatment, including the importance of integrating medical care into trusted community-based harm reduction programs, recognizing the limitations of traditional care systems, and addressing the need for comprehensive services beyond medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).
Identify innovative, patient-centered approaches to delivering care for vulnerable populations, including the use of non-traditional care pathways, mobile health strategies to overcome access barriers, integrated support for social determinants of health, trauma-informed behavioral health services, and agile adaptations to complex service environments.
Describe challenges and successes of innovative interventions to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder and harm reduction resources to people experiencing homelessness.

This 90-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the benefits of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in carceral settings, key legal principles, and advocacy strategies to improve access at both the individual and systems levels.
It's jail, Doc, we don't do Buprenorphine: MOUD advocacy in Indiana's Jails
Recorded: Thursday, April 24, 2025 to Sunday, April 27, 2025 On-Demand Session
Overview
This 90-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the benefits of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in carceral settings, key legal principles, and advocacy strategies to improve access at both the individual and systems levels.
The scientific evidence and legal grounding for medications for opioid use disorder in jails is well established. Unfortunately, despite medical, scientific and legal support for MOUD, access to it remains extremely limited in most jails in Indiana. This treatment gap provides a huge opportunity for providers, legal advocates and communality organizations to come together and advocate for individual patients to have better access but also to change the systems that continue to limit access in jail.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
Summarize the benefits of providing Medications for Opioid Use Disorder to patients with opioid use disorder in carceral settings
Identify legal principles and recent case law relevant to patients with opioid use disorder at risk for incarceration
Identify advocacy strategies to improve access to medications for opioid use disorder both on an individual patient level as well as at a systems level.

Complexities and Controversies in Assessing, Diagnosing, and Managing Kratom Use
Recorded: Thursday, April 24, 2025 to Sunday, April 27, 2025 On-Demand Session
Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses knowledge and practice gaps in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients who use kratom and enabling scientifically-informed practice decisions among providers.
Given the heterogeneity of kratom consumers, the array of products, and limitations in current assessment and testing methods, clinicians may not be equipped for evidence-based practice with respect to patients who use kratom or who may have DSM-5-derived kratom use disorder (KUD). The purpose of this focus session is to help fill knowledge and practice gaps in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients who use kratom and enable scientifically-informed practice decisions.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies:Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication.
Learning Objectives
Define the different types of kratom products in the US and describe how product, formulation, and dose are relevant in the understanding of kratom use.
Identify differences between kratom-related physical dependence symptoms (e.g., tolerance, withdrawal) and kratom use disorder and explain their relevance in assessment and treatment.
Develop clinical skills to conduct assessments of kratom use and kratom use disorder, including appropriate use of laboratory testing, and evaluate treatment options in light of confounding factors.
