Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses frameworks to address complex psychosocial needs and healthcare barriers for adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders.

Adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders face the brunt of ever-evolving substance use epidemics, and many addiction providers feel unequipped to address the unique challenges of this population. This interactive workshop will explore and elucidate topics relevant to caring for adolescents and young adults with substance use concerns with a focus on multidisciplinary approaches. From confidentiality to strength-based frameworks, this workshop will cover tools you can use to improve your knowledge and ability to care for this population.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Develop frameworks to address complex psychosocial needs and healthcare barriers for adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders.
  2. Describe the importance of confidentiality when working with adolescents and young adults, its role in rapport building, understanding legal contexts, and when it is medically necessary to breach confidentiality.
  3. Integrate available interprofessional resources to optimize health services for adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders and understand the value of these resources.

Alexander Golec, MD, FAAP, FASAM

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Johns Hopkins University

Alexander S. Golec, MD, FAAP is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins University and an attending physician in the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Children's Center. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He went on to train in Adolescent Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco before returning to the midwest to complete a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at The Ohio State University. He then completed his Adolescent Medicine training at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Golec is board-certified in Pediatrics and Addiction Medicine, and is board-eligible in Adolescent Medicine. His clinical and research interests are in adolescent health, substance use, and LGBTQ+ health.

Erin McKnight, MD, MPH, FASAM

Erin R. McKnight, MD, MPH, FASAM
Dr. McKnight is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and an attending physician in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and is the Medical Director of the Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Program where her clinical and research interests focus on adolescent substance abuse. She received her medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency training, pediatric chief resident year, and adolescent medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She received her Master in Public Heath from The Ohio State University. Clinically, she provides outpatient care for adolescents with substance use disorder as well as cares for adolescents with reproductive health, mental health, and general care needs. Through quality improvement efforts helped increase retention in the STAR program, therefore improving long term recovery for adolescents and young adults. She has also been instrumental in quality improvement efforts hospital wide to reduce the amount of prescription opioid doses pediatric patients receive from Nationwide Children’s and has increased education on opioid safety for providers, patients, and families, receiving grant funding from Cardinal Health for these endeavors. She has been extensively published, as her research interests include the epidemiologic investigation of opioid misuse in Ohio. She is currently a co-investigator on a National Institute of Health (NIH) R21 grant to utilize latent spatial-temporal models to better characterize the opioid epidemic within the state of Ohio, thereby directing important funds to those areas most affected.

Kelsey Schmuhl, PharmD, BCACP

Dr. Kelsey Schmuhl, PharmD, BCACP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at The Ohio State University. In this role, she teaches undergraduate and professional students at the college of pharmacy and provides pharmacy service at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Adolescent Medicine Clinic. Her clinical interests include caring for patients with substance use disorders, harm reduction, and gender affirming healthcare.

Audrey Knaff, MSW, LISW-S

Social Work Supervisor

Audrey Knaff MSW, LISW-S, Clinical Medical Social Work Supervisor at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Audrey received a master’s degree in social work from The Ohio State University in 2009 and has worked in the field of Social Work for approximately 15 years. Audrey has worked with a wide range of populations in a variety of settings including, community mental health, community health centers, schools, and hospital environments. A majority of her career has been in leadership roles, focused on program planning, development, and implementation of behavioral health and substance use treatment. Audrey’s passion has always been adolescent and young adult populations, which she’s had the pleasure of working with as a part of Nationwide Children’s Adolescent Medicine department for the last two years.
