Overview
This 5-hour online course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop patient-centered service plans and make objective decisions during the Level of Care Assessment and Treatment Planning Assessment for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
Through didactic material and interactive learning activities, this asynchronous course covers the basics of The ASAM Criteria, such as the guiding principles, continuum of care, and how to conduct the Level of Care and Treatment Planning Assessments to provide an appropriate level of care recommendation and individualized treatment plans. Further, by utilizing case scenarios, this course will help prepare you to implement The ASAM Criteria effectively in your practice.
The target audience for this course includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced counselors, social workers, administrators, clinical staff, medical students, and any other healthcare professional who works with individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
Learning Objectives:
- Employ the underlying principles and concepts of The ASAM Criteria 4th Edition.
- Identify key components of The ASAM Criteria 4th Edition and implement them into practice.
- Identify ASAM Criteria 4th Edition’s continuum of care treatment levels and understand how integrated care is implemented within the different levels of care.
- Conduct The ASAM Criteria 4th Edition Level of Care Assessment and apply the Dimensional Admission Criteria to make level of care recommendations.
- Utilize The ASAM Criteria 4th Edition Treatment Planning Assessment to determine treatment priorities and guide treatment planning.

Jennifer Harrison
PhD, LMSW, CAADC
Dr. Harrison is a social worker, chemical addictions counselor, full professor, and professor at Western Michigan University. Her clinical work focuses on integrated substance use, mental health, and physical health services for individuals with co-occurring needs. Her research interests and publication record encompass a diverse range of topics, such as international social justice, the intersection of mental health, substance use, and medical needs among adults, the implementation of evidence-based practices, and the role of peer services in behavioral health. Dr. Harrison co-authored the book Tips and Topics: Opening the Toolbox for Transforming Services and Systems with Dr. David Mee-Lee. She has presented on interprofessional research and teaching in the U.S. and internationally and served on multiple expert panels with SAMHSA. Dr. Harrison is a co-principal investigator in two HRSA-funded projects to impact the interprofessional behavioral health workforce. She has co-developed a digital application, Goal Scaling Solutions, for use in telehealth and education settings to help people develop, monitor, and communicate their goals for wellness and recovery.

Navdeep Kang
PsyD, HSP
Dr. Kang is a clinical psychologist and the Chief Quality Officer for BrightView Health. After spending almost 20 years delivering patient care in a variety of behavioral health service contexts, Dr. Kang joined BrightView for the opportunity to develop, implement, and research best practices in addiction treatment. He leads BrightView’s contributions to the evolving national definition of quality in addiction medicine and is the second-ever non-physician to be appointed to the ASAM’s Quality Improvement Council. Dr. Kang developed BrightView's comprehensive intra-treatment monitoring system, which evaluates patient status at the onset and through the course of treatment, offering both clinicians and patients a high degree of visibility into patients' statuses, allowing for truly personalized care decisions to be made in real-time.
Dr. Kang was selected by President and Mrs. Obama for the Obama Foundation’s inaugural Fellowship class for his leadership in treating addiction collaboratively with partners across the healthcare system. In addition to serving on the National Quality Forum’s Technical Expert Panel on Opioid Use and Opioid Use Disorder and being appointed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to a four-year term on the Recovery Ohio Advisory Council, Dr. Kang is a co-editor of the Fourth Edition of The ASAM Criteria.

Joanna Linn
PhD, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS
Dr. Linn is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC), serving individuals with traumatic grief through counseling and connection with rescue animals near Sedona, Arizona. She is currently a faculty member and consultant for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), helping to design and provide trainings throughout the country in both live and virtual settings. Merging her passion for professional development and clinical work, Dr. Linn began her company, Thrivilege, PLLC, in 2013 and has since conducted over 200 trainings on topics including cultural competency, compassion fatigue, ethics, professional resilience, and co-occurring disorders. In 2016, Dr. Linn was appointed by the Governor to serve as a Mental Health Clinician Representative on the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services. She worked alongside Managed Care Organizations as a Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects Director, a consultant for substance use services, and as a Corporate Compliance Reviewer. While serving as a Program Director and Associate Professor in Human Services, she created an event for students to share their stories of resilience through poetry, theater, and visual arts.

Christine R. Mulford
RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Christine Mulford, RN, MSN, FNP-BC is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who brings more than two decades of clinical practice and leadership to the field of addiction medicine. She has practiced at all levels of outpatient care, including telemedicine. Additionally, she has directed an inpatient medically managed withdrawal management program. Her special interests are meeting the unique treatment needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and reducing stigma for all individuals with substance use disorders.
Ms. Mulford earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has served as a guest lecturer for Arizona State University Project Echo. At ASAM, she holds positions on The ASAM Criteria Education Planning Committee as well as the ASAM CONTINUUM sub-committee. She has been an ASAM Faculty member since 2019.

Jasleen Salwan
MD, MPH
Dr. Salwan is a board-certified internal medicine and addiction medicine physician. She is an Attending Physician in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Montgomery Family and Internal Medicine Associates in Silver Spring, Maryland. She trained at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, earning an MPH concurrently with her MD before pursuing her residency at the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Program.
She subsequently completed an Addiction Medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Since July 2020, she has been providing integrated primary care and substance use disorder treatment, as well as Hepatitis C treatment, at a private practice in Silver Spring. Dr. Salwan's interests include collaborative care models, social justice, and provider wellness. Her work has been published in the Substance Abuse journal (SAj) as well as in the mainstream media, including The Baltimore Sun and The Hartford Courant.
