Overview
This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the key components of the Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering and illustrates its application via case scenarios.
This workshop will summarize the new Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering. Key
takeaways from the guideline will be discussed, utilizing case scenarios for application of knowledge.
Topics for discussion will include patient engagement and shared decision-making, level of care
considerations, BZD tapering strategies, BZD withdrawal management, discharge planning, and
population-specific considerations.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Apply the key clinical takeaways for safely tapering benzodiazepines based upon the Joint Clinical Practice Guideline for Benzodiazepine Tapering.
- Recognize strategies for patient engagement and shared decision-making during BZD tapering.
- Identify complications associated with rapid BZD discontinuation and how to prevent them.

Emily Brunner
MD
Dr. Emily Brunner is an addiction medicine physician currently practicing at Sage Prairie, an outpatient addiction medicine clinic in Eagan, Minnesota. Dr. Brunner received a B.S. in neuroscience at MIT, followed by attending the University of Michigan for medical school and family practice residency. She became board certified in addiction medicine in 2014 via the practice pathway, and worked at Hazelden Betty Ford foundation for 2 years in the outpatient setting, followed by working for several years in a community hospital setting which had an inpatient cd treatment program. Dr. Brunner enjoys teaching residents and med students, and has a strong passion for helping mentor primary care physicians in adding addiction medicine services to their practice. Dr. Brunner has also been involved in ASAM at multiple levels, including as treasurer and president of the Minnesota branch of ASAM, and will be starting a role as regional director for Region VI in 2021. She is also very interested in advocacy for patients, and helping to reduce stigma at the community level and eliminate barriers for treatment of addiction as a chronic disease.

Chinyere Ogbonna
MD, MPH
Chinyere Ogbonna, MD, MPH received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. She extended her medical school training in order to complete a Masters in Community Health Education from Temple University School of Public Health. She completed a combined family medicine and psychiatry residency at the University of Cincinnati/ The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. She continued her training with a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Stanford Hospital & Clinics.
Dr. Ogbonna is board certified in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Ogbonna is an active speaker on screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT), with a specific focus on prevention and early intervention among adolescents and young adults. Her clinical focus also includes perinatal addiction, dual diagnoses, chronic pain, and increasing the integration of medicine and psychiatry in primary care.
Dr. Ogbonna currently is the Medical Director of Addiction Medicine & Recovery Services (AMRS) at Kaiser Permanente San Jose and Adjunct Faculty at Stanford Health. She continues to teach residents and fellows and collaborates with other medical providers to help improve patient access to addiction services.

Tricia Wright
MD, MS, FACOG, FASAM
Tricia Wright, MD MS is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco. Previously she was at the University of Hawaii and founded the Path Clinic, a perinatal clinic specializing in the care of pregnant and parenting women with Substance Use Disorders. She is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Addiction Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She has published multiple papers on pregnancy and addiction as well as a textbook Opioid Use Disorders in Pregnancy published in 2018 by Cambridge University Press.Dr. Wright completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, her MD from the University of Michigan. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of New Mexico and obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from the University of Hawai‘i.
