Session 3: Building Interprofessional Teams: Peer Specialists, Non-MOUD Treatments, and Holistic Approaches to Recovery

Overview
This session provides a comprehensive overview of the interprofessional team approach to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration among diverse professionals to address the complex needs of individuals in recovery. This case-based discussion will define interprofessional collaboration, explore the unique contributions of peer specialists, and discuss available evidence-based non-pharmacologic treatments. Participants will also learn about holistic approaches to recovery, which address the mind, body, and spirit. The session will provide practical strategies and resources for building and sustaining effective interprofessional teams, promoting optimal outcomes for individuals with SUD.
These 1.5-hour sessions include:
- One 40-minute didactic presentation on a featured OUD topic followed by Q&A
- A 15-minute real-world case scenario and discussion led by addiction experts
- Learner case discussion and Q&A
- Up to 1.5 credits per session
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, counselors, addiction educators, and other clinicians part of the care team.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Define interprofessional collaboration in the context of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.
- Explore the unique contributions of peer specialists and discuss evidence-based non-MOUD treatment options.
- Identify practical strategies and resources for building and sustaining effective interprofessional teams to promote optimal outcomes for individuals with SUD.

The Providers Clinical Support System-Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (PCSS-MOUD) is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). It is led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) in collaboration with a wide coalition of national professional and healthcare organizations. PCSS-MOUD aims to increase the knowledge and skills of healthcare and counseling professionals about available evidence-based treatment approaches for substance use disorder (SUD) with a particular focus on opioid use disorder (OUD). PCSS-MOUD provides free training and mentoring to practitioners on the use of medications for OUD (MOUD) and the integration of these services into mainstream health care.

Angela L. Colistra
PhD, LPC, CAADC, CCS
Dr. Angela Colistra has been working with individuals managing co-occurring disorders for over 20 years, lending her expertise to therapy, medical training, clinical supervision, education, and research. She works in behavioral health integration and research in primary care. Dr. Colistra is working on her first textbook: Equipping the Interdisciplinary Workforce to Treat Addiction and Behavioral Health: Reducing the Stigma with Springer. As a mother of two boys, she is dedicated to advancing addiction and behavioral health prevention and education.

Kathryn M. Basques
MSW, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC
Kathryn M. Basques is a psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry. After completing her education at Yale School of Nursing, she started her career at Yale-New Haven Hospital on the first pro-active psychiatric consult service. From 2015-2020, she worked at Rush University Medical Center as the Co-Director of the Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT) and dedicated herself to promoting the early identification of substance use disorders, implementation of an SBIRT model of care in the inpatient units, and improving the management of opioid and alcohol withdrawal syndromes. Since moving to Providence, RI, in 2021, Kathryn was first within the Lifespan Hospital System, continuing to work in a combined inpatient and outpatient, co-occurring clinical role. She is currently the Lead Psychiatry Provider for CODAC, an OTP and comprehensive substance use treatment program with locations throughout Rhode Island. Her areas of interest remain advocating for harm reduction policies in the treatment setting, motivational interviewing, and management of co-occurring syndromes.
