Methadone Dispensing at Acute Care Discharge: Implementing the New 72-Hour Rule
Recorded: Thursday, April 4, 2024 to Sunday, April 7, 2024
On-Demand Session
Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses new DEA guidance on the 72-hour rule, key stakeholders for implementation, and practice using tools from case-based examples across a variety of clinical settings.
In 2022, the DEA updated the 72-hour rule to allow hospitals to dispense up to a three-day supply of methadone at discharge, but provided scant implementation guidance. Led by a multi-institutional panel of physicians and pharmacists who have successfully implemented successful methadone dispensing, this interactive workshop will detail implementation strategies for dispensing methadone in acute care settings: 1) ED, 2) regular hospital discharge, 3) hospital discharge to post-acute care. Participants will be empowered to implement similar protocols at their institutions.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice
This session addresses the following ICPE Competencies:Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork
