Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the relationship between racism, discrimination and health inequities in substance use and addiction treatment.

Substance use disorder treatment programs are an essential element in the effort for health equity in addiction treatment. This workshop reviews the impact of structural racism and discrimination on disparities in substance use and addiction treatment and discusses best practices for integration of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) into addiction treatment. Learners will apply an evidence-based tool for assessing organizations' DEIB culture and identify potential strategies to incorporate DEIB into their own individual practices and those of their organizations.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism

This session addresses the following ICPE Competencies:Values and Ethics, Teams and Teamwork

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between racism, discrimination and health inequities in substance use and addiction treatment
  2. Utilize tools to assess their organizations' DEIB culture and readiness for change to implement DEIB practices and policies.
  3. Discuss best practices for implementation of DEIB practices into the addiction treatment setting.

Anika Alvanzo

MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP

Anika Alvanzo, MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP is the Eastern Region Medical Director for Pyramid Healthcare, Inc. She also serves as a physician consultant on substance use disorders to the Behavioral Health Administration in the Maryland Department of Health and is the Managing Partner of Uzima Consulting Group, LLC, which provides addiction medicine-related consultation, education and training, and expert witness testimony. Dr. Alvanzo is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Alvanzo is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM, a Past President of the Maryland-DC Society of Addiction Medicine (MDDCSAM), and currently serves as Chair of the ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee and Region V Director for the ASAM Board of Directors.

At Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., Dr. Alvanzo’s role is to optimize and standardize the medical care, with emphasis on substance withdrawal management and pharmacotherapy, in the residential and outpatient addiction treatment programs in Eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Prior to this, Dr. Alvanzo spent twelve years as faculty in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she held a variety of clinical leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director of Addiction Treatment Services and the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy and Medical Director of the Broadway Center for Addiction, comprehensive, outpatient substance use disorder treatment (SUD) programs on the Johns Hopkin Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital campuses, respectively. From 2011 – 2018, Dr. Alvanzo directed the Substance Use Disorders Consultation Service, a multidisciplinary addiction consultation service serving the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine general and subspecialty services.

Dr. Alvanzo has served as an expert on National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), National Quality Forum (NQF) and PEW Research Center panels regarding opioids and integration of recovery-oriented care in various medical settings.

Zina is the Founder of Z& D Consulting whose mission is to collaborate with organizations with creating inviting, intentional and inclusive healing spaces for individuals to achieve mental wellness while creating pathways for success for individuals from underrepresented communities. She is passionate about bringing awareness to the vast disparity in mental health and substance use treatment services for BIPOC and LBGTQ+ communities and the need to address how racial and identity trauma impacts individuals and communities.

Zina has over 25 years of experience in marketing and operations. She has held senior leadership positions for national and global behavioral health care companies where she has served as Executive Director and in Senior Marketing and Business Development roles.

Zina has worked internationally which has allowed her to develop a specialty in multi-cultural program development and marketing. She is a global speaker on topics related to culture, diversity, equity, and inclusion in behavioral health care.

Zina is a social worker, certified addiction professional and ARISE trained interventionist. She is also a Certified Diversity Executive and collaborates with treatment providers on the development of transformational DEIB strategies that align with their mission and values. She provides organizations with tools and trainings to hardwire DEIB within their organizational plans by developing sustainable, ongoing initiatives that holds them accountable to keeping systems, processes, and goals inclusive to employees, clients and communities.

Zina is a board member for the following organizations which align with her passion for mental wellness: The National Association of Treatment Providers, Young People in Recovery. C4 Recovery Foundation and serves as Chair for the Brain Love Foundation.

Zina has served as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University School of Social Work. She holds a MSW with a concentration in Administration from Fordham University and a BSW degree from Rutgers University.

Kamala Greene Genece, PhD

Dr. Kamala Greene Génecé of Health Management Associates is a New York state licensed clinical psychologist with more than 15 years of experience in the design and implementation of addiction treatment programs and the utilization of cognitive-behavioral techniques for the treatment of co-occurring substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
Her most recent position was as chief quality officer for Liberty Behavioral Health Management where she provided executive leadership for two continuum of care inpatient/outpatient addiction treatment programs throughout New York State.
A seasoned program developer her team helped treatment providers transition to telehealth services, adapt program practices to new state regulations, integrate primary care and mental health services within opioid treatment sites, and implement family-focused treatment strategies.
Dr. Génecé also worked as chief clinical officer of the Phoenix Houses developing and implementing best practices in residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment. She also held positions with Montefiore Medical Center where she managed division-wide staffing and hiring, Wellness Center primary care clinic operations, and grants and budgets as the deputy director of the Division of Substance Abuse (DoSA) and assistant professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
In addition, Dr. Génecé has served as the administrative director of Addiction Treatments at Bronx Care Medical Center, where she oversaw five levels of ASAM addiction care.
Dr. Génecé has taught and supervised graduate students, psychiatry residents, and Addiction Fellows on the process of disseminating cognitive-behavioral treatments in diverse treatment settings.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Arts and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Boston University. Dr. Genece completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), and finished her post-doctoral work at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University (now known as Partnership to End Addiction).
