Integrated Addiction and Gender Affirming Services for Trans and Gender-Diverse Patients

Recorded: Thursday, April 13, 2023 to Sunday, April 16, 2023
On-Demand Session

Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses gender affirming substance use disorder treatment.

This workshop will develop the concept of gender affirming substance use disorder treatment. Although SUDs affect trans and gender diverse (TGD) populations at disproportionately high rates, addiction providers may be unprepared to care for TGD individuals. We will review clinical standards and protocols to optimize both addiction and gender-affirming care for TGD patients. Topics include: hormone and substance interactions, surgical expectations pertaining to substance use, harm reduction for non-prescribed hormone use, and increasing transgender services and inclusiveness in addiction settings.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement

This session addresses the following IOM Competencies:Provide patient-centered care, Work in interdisciplinary teams

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe current substance use epidemiology and health disparities facing transgender and gender-diverse patients
  2. List unique challenges facing patients seeking both gender-affirming care and addiction care
