Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses strategies aimed at improving outcomes for youth OUD treatment by addressing barriers to uptake, implementation, adherence and retention of MOUD using developmentally-informed approaches, covering the Youth Opioid Recovery Support (YORS) intervention, clinical vignettes, an overview of the research supporting effectiveness.
The opioid crisis has devastating consequences for youth and their families, but despite the evidence, uptake of MOUD, treatment capacity, adherence, retention are all remarkably worse for youth than for mature adults. This session will describe several developmentally-informed approaches to improve OUD outcomes in youth with a particular emphasis on MOUD adherence and retention.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Marc Fishman
MD, DFASAM
Marc Fishman MD is a specialist in addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine. He is a member of the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He leads Maryland Treatment Centers, which offers programs for residential and outpatient treatment of drug-involved and dual-diagnosis adolescents and adults. He has written and lectured widely on a variety of topics including youth treatment, placement and treatment matching strategies, co-occurring disorders, and medication treatment for addiction. His research focus has been in treatment of opioid use disorders in youth.
Dr. Fishman served as a co-editor for the most recent editions of ASAM's Patient Placement Criteria, leading the adolescent section, and served as the chief editor for the ASAM PPC Supplement on Pharmacotherapies for Alcohol Use Disorders. He is the chair of the Adolescent Committee for ASAM. He is a Past President of the Maryland Society of Addiction Medicine, and also a current member of the Board.
Sivabalaji Kaliamurthy, MD, FASAM

Children's National/Howard University
Dr. Kaliamurthy is a physician with board certifications in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine. He earned these certifications through training at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital and Yale University in Connecticut before joining the healthcare community in Washington, DC.
Currently, he holds positions at two esteemed institutions in the nation's capital: Children's National Hospital and Howard University. Dr. Kaliamurthy played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Addiction Clinic at Children's National, a specialized outpatient clinic providing tailored support to children grappling with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. At Howard University, he oversees psychiatric and substance use services at the Mental Health Clinic on select days of the week.
Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Kaliamurthy also serves as a faculty member at The George Washington University and Yale University, where he shares his knowledge with trainees from various specialties, with a primary emphasis on addiction. His advocacy for advancements in pediatric substance use disorder treatment and research reflects his dedication to making positive contributions to the field. Additionally, Dr. Kaliamurthy actively collaborates with local school districts and health departments to proactively address substance use prevention among children and adolescents. His commitment to community well-being and early intervention strategies underscores his dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals and communities affected by addiction and mental health challenges.
Kevin Wenzel, PhD
Director of Research
Maryland Treatment Centers/Mountain Manor
Kevin Wenzel, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the director of research at Maryland Treatment Centers in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Wenzel provides research oversight to the study teams, participates in the design and implementation of clinical trials and other research projects, and helps disseminate results through presentations and other scholarly work. Recent scientific work includes contributing to the design and testing of a multi-component behavioral intervention to improve medication compliance in youth and adults with opioid use disorder funded by the National Institute of Health's Helpint to End Addiction Long-Term (NIH HEAL) initiative. He also is a passionate clinician, providing individual, group, and family therapy to patients at Mountain Manor with previous clinical appointments within the Veteran's Administration Healthcare System.

PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
