Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the fiscal and regulatory requirements involved in establishing a mobile MAT program and successful strategies for involving community stakeholders.

This session seeks to provide key information about managing the regulatory, financial, clinical, and community relations issues critical to the success of a mobile MAT program. The presenters will draw on their experience working closely with SAMHSA, the DEA, the single-state authority for substance use disorder in Illinois and local community groups to operate a mobile MAT unit aimed at serving communities on Chicago's West side most impacted by the opioid crisis.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Increase their understanding of the fiscal and regulatory requirements involved in establishing a mobile MAT program.
  2. Understand the clinical best practices associated with mobile MAT services.
  3. Increase their knowledge about successful strategies for involving community stakeholders in the development and implementation of mobile MAT programs.

Maria Bruni, Ph.D. currently serves as the Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at Family Guidance Centers, Inc. In this role, Maria identifies opportunities to expand existing medication-assisted recovery (MAR) programs for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). She launches new initiatives, including mobile MAR units, utilizing federal, state and local grant awards. She develops and leads the implementation of strategic initiatives to leverage emerging technology, innovative reimbursement models, and trends in the field of behavioral health. Before joining FGC, Maria served as a Senior Policy Advisor for the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, where she worked closely on Medicaid waivers and state plan amendments aimed at expanding and enhancing the services available for Medicaid members with substance use and mental health disorders. Prior to working for HFS, Maria spent over 20 years working for the Illinois Department of Human Services, as the Assistant Secretary for Programs and in multiple roles at the Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (SUPR). At SUPR, Maria was responsible for overseeing the state’s strategic planning process for the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment system of care as well as numerous federally-funded grants. Maria earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration.

Since 1999, Mr. Vlasaty has served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, and has been responsible for the oversight of all the company’s inpatient and outpatient substance use disorder and mental health treatment and prevention programs as well as the operation of hospital based medical detoxification programs.

Mr. Vlasaty also participates in the following governmental councils and advisory boards:

o Chairperson for the Statewide Illinois Advisory Council for the Substance Use Disorders,

o Chairperson for the Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR) Committee of the Statewide Illinois Opioid Crisis Response Advisory Council,

o Board Member - the Behavioral Health Consortium of the Cook County Health and Hospital Systems,

o Advisory Board Member, Cook County Department of Public Health, Suburban Cook County Opioid Advisory Council

o Board Member – State of Illinois Task Force on Disability Income Insurance and Parity for Behavioral Health Conditions

Prior to 1999, Mr. Vlasaty was the Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Bureau of Administration.

Mr. Vlasaty received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Physicians

The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

PAs

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2027.  PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Social Workers

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, ASAM is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit.
