Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the "Simplified Approach to HCV Treatment" recommended in the national HCV guidelines, focusing on how it may be implemented outside of traditional primary care and specialty care clinic settings and highlighting the patient voice and the perspective of persons with lived experience on the relationship between HCV treatment, substance use, and general health.
Hepatitis C (HCV) disproportionately affects people who use drugs, yet treatment rates for people who use drugs remain low. This interactive session will educate participants on the "Simplified Approach" to HCV treatment and describe successful HCV treatment programs in nontraditional settings in Denver, CO. We will focus on our syringe service program-based HCV treatment initiative as well as our approach to HCV treatment provision within our opioid treatment program.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
- Explain and discuss the simplified approach to hepatitis C testing and treatment as recommended in the U.S. national guidelines.
- Describe nontraditional settings for HCV treatment that increase access for people who use drugs. Analyze the challenges of nontraditional approaches and conceptualize solutions to enable implementation of new HCV programs.
- Reflect on patient stories and perspectives on their HCV treatment experience.

- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

Sarah Rowan, MD

Dr. Sarah Rowan is the Director of the Division and HIV, Sexual Health, and Viral Hepatitis at the Public Health Institute at Denver Health and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado Denver. She is board certified in infectious diseases and specializes in the care of patients with HIV, hepatitis C, and sexually transmitted infections. Dr. Rowan’s research focuses on optimizing public health efforts to diagnose, treat, and prevent HIV and hepatitis C (HCV). She also serves as the Associate Director for Public and Community Health for the Mentored Scholarly Activity Program in the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Kevin Kamis, MPH

Kevin Kamis is the Clinic Administrator for Denver Sexual Health Clinic. In his previous roles, he managed various projects focused on expanding hepatitis C testing and treatment models to priority populations, worked to link individuals with HIV to care, and coordinated HIV/STD/viral heaptitis research and public health grants. He is passionate about improving and expanding treatment models to marginalized and underserved populations.
Ruth Kanatser

Ruth has been an integral staff member with our agency since 2003. In December 2011, Ruth was recognized for her tireless efforts to improve the lives of PWUD by receiving the inaugural Josephine Roche Award from the city of Denver for excellence in direct service to a marginalized community. As director of the syringe access program and senior health educator her time and expertise is spent primarily referring program participants into substance use treatment or other vital services and educating our participants, community members and other service providers around the health issues that can effect PWID and how to reduce said harms.
Ruth has a special passion for trying to improve the historically mistrustful and adversarial relationship between health care providers and PWUD through education and advocacy. Especially when concerning pregnant women who use drugs.
She lives with her husband John and a cat who is excellent company for her favorite pass times of reading and napping.
Hannan Braun, MD

Hannan Braun, MD is an Instructor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Denver Health focusing on substance use disorder, HIV, and general primary care. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine-Primary Care at Boston Medical Center and fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Brown University. His clinical and scholarship interests include low-barrier substance use disorder treatment, harm reduction, LGBTQ+ health, and inpatient addiction medicine.
