Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses knowledge and practice gaps in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients who use kratom and enabling scientifically-informed practice decisions among providers.
Given the heterogeneity of kratom consumers, the array of products, and limitations in current assessment and testing methods, clinicians may not be equipped for evidence-based practice with respect to patients who use kratom or who may have DSM-5-derived kratom use disorder (KUD). The purpose of this focus session is to help fill knowledge and practice gaps in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients who use kratom and enable scientifically-informed practice decisions.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies:Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication.
Learning Objectives
- Define the different types of kratom products in the US and describe how product, formulation, and dose are relevant in the understanding of kratom use.
- Identify differences between kratom-related physical dependence symptoms (e.g., tolerance, withdrawal) and kratom use disorder and explain their relevance in assessment and treatment.
- Develop clinical skills to conduct assessments of kratom use and kratom use disorder, including appropriate use of laboratory testing, and evaluate treatment options in light of confounding factors.

Kristin Smith
DNP, FNP-C
Kristin Smith graduated from St. John Fisher’s FNP/DNP program in May 2013. She is a staff clinician and the Program Director of a Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Program at Highland Family Medicine, where she provides Medication Assisted Treatment (MATx) in both dedicated suboxone clinics as well as integrated primary care settings. Dr. Smith is also a certified American Academy of HIV Medicine Specialist with experience providing HIV care and Pre/Post-Exposure prophylaxis. Prior to transitioning to her current role, she served as the Clinical Director of an Opioid Overdose Prevention Program, where she became passionate about harm reduction while providing community training on Naloxone, teaching safe injection practices, and providing needle exchange services in collaboration with a team of individuals through Trillium Health.

Stephanie T. Weiss
MD, PhD
Stephanie T. Weiss, MD PhD is the staff Research Physician serving the Translational Addiction Medicine Branch (TAMB) of the NIDA Intramural Research Program. After earning a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry, Dr. Weiss received her medical degree from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She is board certified in emergency medicine and medical toxicology, a subspecialty that cares for patients with poisonings, environmental exposures, and overdoses. She subsequently completed a second fellowship in addiction medicine research and was selected to participate in the Boston University Research in Addiction Medicine Scholars Program prior to joining NIDA. Dr. Weiss assumes responsibility for providing optimal, safe, and ethical care to study participants and clinical support toward the TAMB mission conducting inpatient and outpatient proof-of-concept human laboratory studies. Her research interests include novel psychoactive substances, medication misuse, and improving interpretation of urine drug testing.

Ian Latham, MD
Addiction Medicine Fellow
Univeristy of Minnesota
Ian Latham, MD is an Addiction Medicine Fellow at the University of Minnesota; he recently completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota / North Memorial residency program. He completed his undergraduate education in Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his medical education at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he participated in research in Narrative Medicine, trauma-informed addiction care, and mobile services for buprenorphine treatment. Ian has a particular interest in working with patients who identify within the LGBTQ+ community, the management of behavioral addictions, and the treatment and prevention of viral disease among people living with addiction.
Robert Levy
MD
Robert Levy M.D. is board certified in Addiction Medicine and Family Medicine. He is an assistant professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota and a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine having done a fellowship in Addiction and Chronic Pain at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also practices full-spectrum family medicine, including obstetrics. He is President elect of the Minnesota Society of Addiction Medicine. He recently received a grant from SAMHSA to help Minnesota address the opioid epidemic. In 2018 he was awarded the Minnesota Society of Family Medicine Teacher of the Year award. His interests are in addicted health care professionals, chronic pain management, the integration of addiction treatment into primary care, and addiction in pregnancy and the neonatal period.
