ASAM Criteria One-Day Foundations Course
Friday, November 18, 2022 | 8:30 am - 5:30 pm MT
This 8-hour live virtual course covers a comprehensive suite of competency-based learning activities in a live interactive webinar delivery format that meets the learning needs of the multiple audiences making use of the Criteria and results in the appropriate use of the Criteria in practice. This is a practical training designed to help develop patient-centered service plans and make objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups.
The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.
The target audience for this beginner, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.
This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems Based Practice.
- Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria
- Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment
- Determine treatment priorities based on risk assessment to guide treatment and service planning
- Determine an appropriate level of care and treatment priorities based on risk assessment
- Implement the ASAM Criteria, in the context of system challenges, for patients with addiction to ensure appropriate level of care and treatment outcomes.

RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Christine R. Mulford, RN, MSN, FNP-BC brings her more than 15 years of clinical and leadership experience as a Nurse Practitioner to the practice of addiction medicine. She is passionate about individualized patient care as well as community education to end the stigma of substance use and mental health issues.
Together with her physician partner, she started the first Emergency Room based withdrawal management service in the greater Phoenix area. Additionally, she maintains a private addiction medicine practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. Christine received her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University where she was the 1998 Julia Hereford Merit Scholar. She resides in Phoenix, Arizona with her 2 sometimes well-behaved dogs. She enjoys live music, sports, and trying new hot sauces.

Joanna Linn, PhD, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS is a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Certified Clinical Supervisor in Addictions, and an Addiction Specialist. She has a background in providing therapy for SAIOP programs, a Level I Trauma Center, as well as outpatient programs. As the owner of Thrivilege, PLLC, she has provided trainings throughout her career on Co-Occurring Disorders, Ethics, Cultural Competency, and Compassion Fatigue/Satisfaction. In 2016-2019, she was appointed by the North Carolina Governor to serve as a Mental Health Clinician Representative on the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services. She also served as the Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects Director for the NC Council of Community Programs. Dr. Linn has been trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1. She currently serves as a committee member on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
Her educational background includes a doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Counseling and Counselor Supervision and a master’s degree in Community Counseling from Wake Forest University. She has an undergraduate degree in Education and has been a Professor and Program Director in Human Services in community college. Her passion for merging clinical work and trainings is to ensure they interactive, engaging, and practical.
