Overview
This 6-hour, live-virtual course is the recommended first step to understanding the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition and covers developing patient-centered service plans as well as making objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Fourth Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups.
The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM-approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.
The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course includes: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.
This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems-Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria
Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment
Determine treatment priorities based on risk assessment to guide treatment and service planning
Determine an appropriate level of care and treatment priorities based on risk assessment
Implement the ASAM Criteria, in the context of system challenges, for patients with addiction to ensure appropriate level of care and treatment outcomes

All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to Education@ASAM.org within 90 days of purchase. Those requesting refunds for courses that are in progress will receive partial refunds or e-Learning Center credit.

Jeff Brooks
DMIN, LCAS ACRPS, CHE
Dr. Brooks holds an undergraduate degree in psychology, a graduate degree in Healthcare Administration and a Doctorate in Preaching, Theology and Leadership. He has an extensive background in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders, serving children, adolescents and adults, and their families over a 33-year career. He holds multi-state licensure as a Clinical Addiction Specialist & Clinical Supervisor (North Carolina, Colorado, South Carolina), an Advanced Certification in Relapse Prevention from the renowned CENAPS Corporation (Gorski), a national certification as a Master Addiction Counselor (NAADAC) and is Board Certified in Healthcare Management through the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
Jeff has utilized the ASAM Criteria since 1995 and has worked as a faculty member since June 2021. He currently serves as a practitioner, trainer and consultant for individuals, professionals and organizations within the behavioral health care sector.
Jeff formerly served as a licensed pastor and writer. He currently resides in South Carolina with his wife and best friend of 33 years. They maintain an active lifestyle with outdoor adventures, live for college football season and enjoy visiting with their adult children and grandchildren.

Professor and Program Director
Western Michigan University, Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Dr. Lee is a Professor at Western Michigan University (WMU) and the Director of the Addiction Studies program. From 21-23, Dr. Lee was the Chair of the School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs at WMU.
She has almost 20 years of experience in the field of addiction as a counselor and educator. Her grant and research activities primary focus on addiction training in medical and mental health professions. Dr. Lee recently published a 2nd edition of a textbook on diversity aspects in addiction treatment. She also served as vice-chair on the Michigan Health Professionals Recovery Committee and worked closely with the Attorney General's office to update policies for the state’s recovery program.
Dr. Lee received her B.S. in Psychology from the Univ. of Florida, M.A. in Community Counseling from the Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham, and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from WMU. She enjoys spending time with her young son and partner, especially when it includes any time on the water or camping. She also loves watching college football.
In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC)/Continuing Certification Program (CCP)
This activity is designed to meet the requirements for MOC/CCP for several primary physician boards and for state licensing CME requirements. MOC Credit is only reported and designated for ABA, ABP, ABIM, and ABS.
