Overview
This 8-hour live virtual course expands on the content discussed within the ASAM Criteria One-Day Foundations course and provides an in-depth understanding of developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating initial reviews and continued stay reviews, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment.
The ASAM Criteria Skill Building Course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and explore their role in constructing a full range of services for the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). The Course builds on the foundational concepts of The ASAM Criteria that will offer practical guidelines to drive objective decision-making and ensure fidelity to The ASAM Criteria. Using a practical and case-based approach, participants will explore important considerations in developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating progress versus nonprogress in treatment, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment. Further, the training will provide tools and resources to equip healthcare providers to work effectively in managed care settings and explore how case shaping can drive patients' overall quality of care.
The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course includes: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.
This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems-Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Examine the guiding principles of the ASAM Criteria and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation
Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions based on imminent danger and immediate needs, as defined in the ASAM Criteria
Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate in accordance with the ASAM Criteria
Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on the ASAM Criteria to drive ongoing evidence-based care
Implement a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers using common terminology of the ASAM Criteria to ensure patient-centered care
Examine implementation challenges and develop strategies to provide appropriate treatment for patients with SUDs

Attend the live virtual course on June 27th, 2025 at 8:30 am Mountain Time. The link will open 10-15 minutes before the course starts.
Attend the virtual-live course via zoom (you must be present for the entire course in order to take the post-test).
Ensure that you have downloaded zoom and make sure all updates have been installed.
Learners are strongly encouraged to have their cameras on and actively participate in the course.

Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM e-Learning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

Joanna Linn
PhD, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS
Dr. Linn has been involved in the field of mental health and addiction for 20 years. She has worked in various academic and leadership roles in both North Carolina and Arizona, including Program Director and a Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects Director. She has also worked in Corporate Compliance as an investigator for Medicaid Fraud and Abuse. She began her career in an Opioid Treatment Center, and her focus has remained on co-occurring disorders, professional resilience, and compassion fatigue.
Her private practice work includes consulting managed care organizations. As a member of the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health and Development Disabilities, she served both on the Rules and Advisory committees. She has worked with ASAM as a faculty member and past member of the Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine Program Planning Committee since 2021.
She received her master’s degree in Community Counseling from Wake Forest University and her Doctorate in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Joanna is currently working in the forefront of mental health care and currently resides in North Carolina. In her down time, she enjoys kayaking, running, writing fiction, and working with rescue animals.

Christine R. Mulford
RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Christine Mulford, RN, MSN, FNP-BC is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who brings more than two decades of clinical practice and leadership to the field of addiction medicine. She has practiced at all levels of outpatient care, including telemedicine. Additionally, she has directed an inpatient medically managed withdrawal management program. Her special interests are meeting the unique treatment needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and reducing stigma for all individuals with substance use disorders.
Ms. Mulford earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has served as a guest lecturer for Arizona State University Project Echo. At ASAM, she holds positions on The ASAM Criteria Education Planning Committee as well as the ASAM CONTINUUM sub-committee. She has been an ASAM Faculty member since 2019.
In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
