The ASAM Pain & Addiction: Applied Skills Workshop, is designed to increase learner’s skills in treating pain and addiction. The workshop is a dynamic and interactive opportunity for those who have some experience in pain and addiction to apply essential treatment skills to their practice and attendees should come ready to engage in dialogue with expert faculty and peers.

What You’ll Learn

After taking this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Compare validated pain and addiction screening tools and create a plan to integrate them into workflows.
  • Create trauma-informed, patient-centered treatment plans exemplifying SMART goals.
  • Apply principles of motivational interviewing and brief counseling to engage patients in their treatment of pain and addiction.
  • Create a script that engages the patient in a deeper understanding of chronic pain and substance use disorders as neurobiological conditions that require a multidisciplinary approach emphasizing longitudinal care interventions and self-care techniques.
  • Apply pharmacologic techniques such as buprenorphine induction, opioid tapering, and non-opioid medication management.
  • Select patient-centered non-pharmacologic pain and addiction treatment methods consistent with community-based resources.
