Virtual Live Course
Overview
This 8-hour virtual live course covers treating opioid use disorder by using interactive, case-based learning to teach evidence-based practices and also provides the education needed to prescribe buprenorphine.
Please Note: That recent legislation has removed the waiver requirement to prescribe buprenorphine. Some of the course content and descriptions refer to the waiver and we appreciate your patience as we work to update this content. The target audience for this introductory-level course includes: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists who wish to prescribe buprenorphine in an office-based setting for opioid use disorder.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Medical Knowledge.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify, assess, and diagnose patients with opioid use disorder while considering severity, chronicity, individual characteristics, and psychiatric and medical comorbidities
- Develop an individualized, patient-centered treatment plan including negotiating treatment goals by evaluating appropriate medication- and psychosocial-based treatment options
- Monitor progress and modify treatment plan based on patient needs and progress toward treatment goals
- Implement best practices for office systems including team-based care to support treatment with medications for opioid use disorder
- Examine misconceptions, stigma, and complexities (bioethical, social, clinical, public health) associated with opioid use disorder and the use of medications to treat opioid use disorder

Daniel A. Nauts
MD, FASAM
Dr. Daniel A. Nauts, MD, FASAM, is an addiction medicine specialist who completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan. He has developed numerous inpatient and outpatient substance use disorder (SUD) programs and medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) services. As an independent contractor for the Montana Primary Care Association, he provides TOUD training, community forums on opioid use disorders, and strategies for tapering high-dose opioids. Active in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), he supports physician and nurse health through Professional Assistance Programs and offers addiction medicine training for medical residents, APRN trainees, and PA students. Dr. Nauts is on the Drug Utilization Board of Mountain Pacific Quality Health and has held leadership roles within the Northwest Society of Addiction Medicine.

Kirk Moberg
MD, PhD, DFASAM
Kirk Moberg, MD, PhD, DFASAM is a graduate of and Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Trained in Internal Medicine he practiced in the field of Addiction Medicine for over 25 years and served as medical director of three addiction treatment centers, most recently at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery in the Unity Point Health System. He is certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine-Addiction Medicine and is certified as a Medical Review Officer. In addition to the Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine course, Dr. Moberg teaches the Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits and the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder courses for ASAM.
