Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses the implementation of Trauma Informed Care principles into their practices.

A psychiatry provider team is presenting a workshop to help addiction and primary care providers implement Trauma Informed Care principles into their practices. Topics presented will include neurobiology of trauma, screening for trauma, performing a trauma informed care physical exam, integrating trauma informed practice into Motivational Interviewing, and evaluating the impact of provider vicarious trauma history on their practice. Session will conclude with practice scenarios through small group discussion.

The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize Trauma Informed Care practices that are easily implemented into primary care settings and differentiate between trauma informed care and trauma specific treatment
  2. Conduct a review of participants current medical practices and identify barriers to implementation of Trauma informed care principals.
  3. Implement and respond to trauma informed screening with appropriate follow-up evaluation and referral to additional resources as needed.

Allie Thomas-Fannin, MD, FASAM

Program Director IUSM Psychiatry Residency and Staff Psychiatrist Good Samaritan Hospital

Indiana University

Dr. Allie Thomas-Fannin MD completed her medical training at University of Louisville in 2012 before attending Duke University for Psychiatry Residency. She is the current Program Director for the IUSM (Vincennes) Psychiatry program in Vincennes Indiana and an adjunct assistant, clinical professor at Indiana University in the school of medicine. During training, she developed an interest in working with addiction populations at the VA medical center in Durham and while in her role as chief resident for the VA working on a project to increase the motivational interviewing skills of third year medical students and decrease stigma among medical trainees. After completing her psychiatry training in 2016, she began working at Good Samaritan Hospital at the Samaritan Center community mental health center and later obtained board certification in addiction medicine in 2021. She was named program director of the new IUSM psychiatry program in 2017, which will graduate its first class in 2023. She has practiced clinically with community mental health center patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings and helped found a PHP program for addictions at the Samaritan Center in 2020.

Christy Riddle is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) practicing at Riverfront Counseling Centre within the Good Samaritan Hospital network in Vincennes, Indiana.

Christy additionally currently provides medication management services and therapy for Roadways to Recovery in Greenwood, Indiana seeing patients on an outpatient basis and in a few various facilities in Indiana to assist then with detox from drugs and alcohol. Christy has been an adjunct instructor for the Indiana University School of Medicine psychiatric residency program since 2020.

Prior to joining the Good Samaritan Hospital network in 2020, Christy was the director of a substance abuse partial hospitalization program in Indiana. She has served as chief clinician for a residential treatment facility for Sunrise Children Services in Kentucky and previously as a clinical director of psychiatric residential treatment facilities for RiverValley Behavioral Health in Owensboro, KY. Christy was previously a family case manager serving as an investigator with the Department of Child Services in Indiana.

Christy has 20 years of experience as a therapist specializing in trauma-based disorders with evidence-based practice skills of TF-CBT, EMDR, and DBT.

Christy received her bachelor and master degrees in social work and nursing from the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, IN.
