Overview

This 2-hour, highly interactive, in-person course will focus on the importance of integrating tobacco cessation treatment either simultaneously or sequentially during addiction treatment.  

This highly interactive workshop will focus on the importance of integrating tobacco cessation treatment either simultaneously or sequentially during addiction treatment. Learners will explore how to provide effective nicotine withdrawal management when patients are admitted to withdrawal management and intensive inpatient centers. The skills include assessing levels of dependence, matching evidence based pharmacological and behavioral support to help patients achieve lasting remission without compromising their recovery journey and possibly enhancing recovery. Special focus on the integration in ambulatory OAT programs will be explored.  

The target audience for this course is healthcare providers and clinicians who seek practical tools, resources, and effective interventions for treating patients with tobacco use disorder during addiction treatment.

This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Procedural Skills and Medical Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

    1. Select the optimal first line treatment plan for addressing tobacco withdrawal and cessation in those with concurrent tobacco use disorder and other substance use disorders. 
    2. Apply a biopsychosocial plan to non-responders to treatment. 
    3. Apply a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens to different case vignettes scenarios around concurrent tobacco use disorder and non-responders to treatment.

Esa Davis

MD, MPH, FAAFP

Esa M. Davis, MD, MPH, FAAFP is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the Director of the UPMC Tobacco Treatment Service (TTS) at Presbyterian/ Montefiore Hospitals, which provides inpatient treatment to hospitalized adults and outpatient treatment to presurgical and oncology patients with tobacco use disorder; education and training to physicians and clinical staff; and supports research through conduction of clinical trials. As Director of the UPMC Tobacco Treatment Service she has implemented new system-level tobacco programs within the UPMC health system. Her TTS team collaborated with the PA state Quitline vendor National Jewish Health and PA Dept of Health on the eReferral demonstration project. This collaboration resulted in the implementation of the first in the nation bi-directional electronic referral process at UPMC hospitals to the PA State Quitline. Dr. Davis is a NIH funded clinical researcher with a patient-oriented and comparative effectiveness research program focused on obesity-related health disparities in women and in treating tobacco use in hospitalized and surgical patients. She was site PI on the NIH randomized controlled trials-- Helping Hands 2 and 4 -- which investigated effective strategies for tobacco use treatment of hospitalized adults who smoke tobacco after discharge. She has served as co-investigator and study physician on three federally funded Center for Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes (CENIC) studies to evaluate new nicotine standards for cigarettes. She was PI of a Beckwith Institute Transformation Innovation grant, which helped to launch the successful implementation of a perioperative telemedicine tobacco cessation program for the orthopedic total joint replacement program and neurosurgical services lines at UPMC. Her team, funded by the Shadyside Axillary, implemented a patient safety project in collaboration with physicians, nursing and security to decrease patients leaving the floor to smoke during hospitalization at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. She is Co-Director of the NCI funded “Now’s the Time to Quit Tobacco for Life” program, which is providing comprehensive smoking cessation and tobacco treatment within Hillman Cancer Center’s outpatient oncology clinics. Dr. Davis is a board-certified practicing Family Physician in the General Internal Medicine Clinic at UPMC Montefiore Hospital and at Children’s Primary Care Center in Turtle Creek. She serves on the United States Preventive Services Task Force and American Heart Association Board of Greater Pittsburgh Affiliate. She is married to a cardiologist and has two teenage children.

Peter Selby

MBBS, CCFP, FCFP, DFASAM

Dr. Peter Selby is a Senior Medical Consultant and Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). He is the Vice-Chair, of Research, and Giblon Professor in Family Medicine Research, a University Named Professorship at the University of Toronto.  He is also the Director of the Mental Health and Addictions Division in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto.  His research focuses on innovative methods to understand and treat addictive behaviors and their comorbidities. He also uses technology to combine clinical medicine and public health methods to scale up and test health interventions.

 

He has received grant funding totaling over 100 million dollars from CIHR, NIH, and the Ministry of Health and has published >150 peer-reviewed publications. He has published 6 books (including 5 edited), is the author of 31 book chapters, and has 38 research reports prepared for the government. He is the Chair of the Medical Education Council for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Selby mentors Fellows in Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry, junior investigators, and medical students. The use of innovative methods to communicate messages makes Dr. Selby a sought-after speaker for various topics including addictive disorders, motivational interviewing, and health behavior change at individual and system levels.
