Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses the development of an addiction medicine curriculum for trainees.

Given new ACGME requirements of educating learners on substance use, this workshop will focus on the development of an addiction medicine curriculum for trainees. Participants will learn what elements and personnel are necessary to build a robust curriculum that is inclusive of stigma awareness, patient-centered documentation and language, and harm reduction. By the end of this workshop, participants will have the knowledge to build or improve upon their own playbook on how to teach trainees about addiction medicine.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. To demonstrate increased awareness and knowledge of available resources that exist locally and online for training materials for an addiction medicine curriculum.
  2. To list the essential components of an addiction medicine curriculum for a medical learner, including patient-center documentation and standards of care in patients with a substance use disorder.
  3. To recognize and characterize non-biased, nonjudgmental communication skills a medical learner should portray and demonstrate the means by which to teach those skills to a medical learner.

Elizabeth Cuevas, MD

Division Chief for Center for Inclusion Health

Allegheny Health Network

Dr. Cuevas received her Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in 1997 and her M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2001. She completed her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. After completing residency in 2004, she took a dual appointment, worked in an outpatient academic primary care academic practice at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in various clinics in Boston with the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) where she served as the medical director for several homeless clinical sites in Boston.
Dr. Cuevas left Boston in 2011 and moved to Pittsburgh, joining the staff at Allegheny General Hospital. Her initial clinical time was devoted to the education of IM Residents at AGH, as a preceptor in outpatient clinic as well as an attending on the inpatient teaching teams. She worked as an Associate Program Director for the IM Residency Program from 2012 through 2018 before stepping down to the position of Core Faculty member with the residency program. Dr. Cuevas was one of the founders of the Center for Inclusion Health (CIH) at AHN in 2014 and assumed the role of Director of Primary Care Transformation for the IM Residency Clinics in 2018 and then Division Chief of Academic Internal Medicine in 2019. For CIH, she worked on projects including the implementation of an inpatient CIH rounding team, the medical respite program, a SDOH screening program, the behavioral health integration into primary care, and a CIH specialized track for medical residents interested in the work of CIH. In addition to her clinical and administrative duties, Dr. Cuevas played an active role in revitalizing an AHN system-wide Women in Medicine program to address issues of gender equity and wellness.

Divya Venkat

MD

Divya Venkat, MD, Faculty, Center for Inclusion Health, Allegheny Health Network, Pittsburgh, PA

Dr. Venkat is a current faculty physician with the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Center for Inclusion Health at Allegheny Health Network. She completed her medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine and her subsequent training in the Inclusion Health Track at Allegheny Health Network followed by her chief residency. She is currently the co-director of the Inclusion Health track and has a particular focus in substance use disorders, incarceration, education, and health care delivery.

Elizabeth Desmarais, DO

Instructor, Department of Hospital Medicine

University of Colorado Hospital

Elizabeth Desmarais, D.O., is board-certified in internal medicine. She is currently a hospitalist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, then went on to complete her residency training at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. During her residency she received additional training in the Inclusion Health and Medical Education tracks. Her work has focused on the incorporation of addiction medicine into medical training.

Ashish Thakrar, MD

MD

Ashish Thakrar, MD is a Fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Thakrar is an Internist and an Addiction Medicine Specialist. Dr. Thakrar’s research and advocacy focuses on improving access to treatment for opioid use disorder in the fentanyl era, improving quality and retention in care for patients with addiction, and in health services reform to standardize hospital-based care for patients with addiction. Dr. Thakrar works clinically in primary care and as a hospital-based Addiction Medicine Consult physician.
