On-Demand Session
Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses career advancement and the practice of addiction medicine.
This interactive session will be a panel discussion from 4 unique Addiction Medicine specialists who will describe and share their career paths and background. The panel is meant to encourage ASAM members to understand their future career options. The panel discussion will also serve to show highly representative career paths by a diverse panel.
The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify the spectrum of diverse career paths available to addiction medicine physicians.
- Understand how an addiction medicine physician may choose one career path versus another based on individual goals and interests.
- Describe key differences between different career paths.

Melissa B. Weimer
DO, MCR, FASAM
Melissa Weimer is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health and Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Yale University. She is an expert in hospital-based care for patients with substance use disorders and has worked with colleagues to develop successful hospital-based Addiction Medicine Consult Services at both Oregon Health & Science University and Yale University/Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Weimer is also a national leader in Addiction Medicine education and has developed curricula for substance use disorder evaluation and treatment and safe and effective pain treatment. Dr. Weimer serves on the national board of ASAM and is the Chair of the ASAM Clinical Practice Guidelines Methodology and Oversight Committee.

Anika Alvanzo
MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP
Anika Alvanzo, MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP is the Eastern Region Medical Director for Pyramid Healthcare, Inc. She also serves as a physician consultant on substance use disorders to the Behavioral Health Administration in the Maryland Department of Health and is the Managing Partner of Uzima Consulting Group, LLC, which provides addiction medicine-related consultation, education and training, and expert witness testimony. Dr. Alvanzo is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Alvanzo is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM, a Past President of the Maryland-DC Society of Addiction Medicine (MDDCSAM), and currently serves as Chair of the ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee and Region V Director for the ASAM Board of Directors.
At Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., Dr. Alvanzo’s role is to optimize and standardize the medical care, with emphasis on substance withdrawal management and pharmacotherapy, in the residential and outpatient addiction treatment programs in Eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Prior to this, Dr. Alvanzo spent twelve years as faculty in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she held a variety of clinical leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director of Addiction Treatment Services and the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy and Medical Director of the Broadway Center for Addiction, comprehensive, outpatient substance use disorder treatment (SUD) programs on the Johns Hopkin Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital campuses, respectively. From 2011 – 2018, Dr. Alvanzo directed the Substance Use Disorders Consultation Service, a multidisciplinary addiction consultation service serving the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine general and subspecialty services.
Dr. Alvanzo has served as an expert on National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), National Quality Forum (NQF) and PEW Research Center panels regarding opioids and integration of recovery-oriented care in various medical settings.

Shonali Saha, MD, FASAM

Whole and Healthy You Addiction Medicine Services
Shonali Saha, MD, FASAM is a board-certified addiction medicine specialist. She completed fellowships in both addiction and adolescent medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her residency program in internal medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance of Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Saha began working in the field of substance use disorders in 1996 with women mandated to residential treatment. She currently treats substance use disorders with MAT in adolescents, adults, and families in her own private practice Whole and Healthy You Addiction Medicine Services in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Saha is also cares for patients as a physician for Bright Heart Health. She educates medical students, residents, and faculty on addiction medicine as an adjunct assistant professor at Emory School of Medicine and as a preceptor for physician assistant students at Mercer University.
Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, DFASAM, FAPA

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health
Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM is an addiction physician and the Medical Director of the Division of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Brian currently serves as President of the ASAM Board of Directors. He chairs the 2021 Strategic Planning Task Force; he also serves as a member of ASAM’s Medical Education Council, Finance Council and other committees. He chairs the Los Angeles County SafeMedLA Medications for Addiction Treatment Action Team, and is the Clinical Director of the Addiction Treatment Starts Here programs through the Center for Care Innovations, focused on increasing the delivery of medications for addiction treatment in California’s community health centers.
He is a senior researcher at the Friends Research Institute; and is a primary investigator on a Tobacco-Related Disease Prevention Program-funded project integrating smoking cessation services into community mental health centers and patient-centered medical homes. Additionally, Dr. Hurley is the grant lead for several Medications for Addiction Treatment Access Points projects funded by the Sierra Health Foundation supporting access to medications for addiction treatment across Los Angeles County.
Brian completed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); and, is an alumnus of the Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital Psychiatry Residency Training Program and the New York University Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Additionally, he has served in various roles for the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine, New York Society of Addiction Medicine, and California Society of Addiction Medicine.
