Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the key components of addiction medicine integration into primary care.

Join a panel of primary care professionals as they share their experience integrating addiction medicine into the fabric of a primary care system. Attendees will gain practical insights into implementation of this clinical model, the role of the team in accomplishing goals, and patient perspectives regarding receiving addiction treatment in their medical home.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Systems-based Practice

This session addresses the following ICPE Competencies:Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate the key components of addiction medicine integration into primary care.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to explain the roles of various team members in an interdisciplinary collaboration, understanding how such an interdisciplinary approach enhances patient-centered care.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to advocate for enhanced integration of addiction medicine into the primary care infrastructure.

Zachary Sartor, MD, FAAFP is a Family Medicine physician, Associate Program Director at the Waco Family Medicine Residency, and the Director for Primary Care Addiction Medicine at Waco Family Medicine Center. He graduated from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in 2016 and completed residency training at Waco Family Medicine Residency in 2019. His clinical interests include primary care behavioral health and substance use treatment. He is active in curriculum design and evaluation and clinical research.

José Peña is a board certified family medicine physician currently practicing full-scope family medicine in Waco, Texas. José is a faculty member of a family medicine residency where he is entrusted in the education and training of future physicians at a federally qualified health center. His general professional interests are maternal-child health and addiction medicine. His additional work focus is on inpatient medicine and simulation training in medical education. When not working, José enjoys time with his wife and two daughters trying new food and spending time exploring the outdoors.

Prior to working as an IBHC, I was a psychotherapist in the WFM Counseling Center for three years. I have been working with the Primary Care Addiction Medicine clinic at WFM for the last two years.

Ryan Laschober, MD, FAAFP

Ryan Laschober, MD, FAAFP is an Associate Program Director for Waco Family Medicine Residency and Editor-in-Chief of The Waco Guide to Psychopharmacology in Primary Care. Dr. Laschober received a BS in Biochemistry Baylor University and, MD from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed his family medicine residency training at Waco Family Medicine Residency, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Laschober is invested in full-scope family medicine with special interests in global health, mental health care, social determinants of health, and resident education.

Physicians

The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
