Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses healthcare worker stigma against people with substance use disorder as a significant barrier to the provision of high quality, evidence-based treatment in hospitals and Emergency departments.
The science to medicine transition for substance use disorder treatment has been stymied by stigma. This workshop will guide participants through a hospital intervention that includes a perspective-taking exercise, a neurobiology of addiction component, and an educational session on medications for addiction treatment. A toolkit will be shared to assist others in the development of their own stigma training. Workshop participants will work in small groups to develop their own plan to address stigma in their respective setting.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify healthcare worker stigma against people who drugs as a significant barrier to the provision of high quality, evidence-based treatment in hospitals and Emergency departments.
- Discuss the impact of stigma through the lens of a person with lived history of substance use disorder.
- Develop an action plan to address stigma, facilitated with the assistance of a tool and through a short example of an intervention that has been successfully completed in hospital, clinic, and community settings.

David Jay, PhD is the Substance Use Disorder Project Coordinatory at Marshall Medical Center located in rural El Dorado County, California. David is a passionate harm reductionist focused on sustainable system change that expand and normalize the compassionate treatment of people who use drugs. His role at Marshall is wide ranging from direct patient care, process and infrastructure improvement, management of research studies, hospital and community-wide education, grant writing and management, and the formation and maintenance of community partnerships.
