Overview

This 2-hour, live virtual session is part of the FAME 8-session series and will cover co-occurring pain in the outpatient setting. 

The FAME series is a facilitated, in-depth discussion of real patient cases provided by participants with the opportunity to receive mentoring and feedback from multi-disciplinary addiction expert faculty. The series is designed for members of the healthcare team who are new to treating patients with addiction so they can gain additional insights, knowledge, and confidence. 

This two-hour virtual FAME session includes:

  • One 20-to-30-minute didactic presentation on a featured addiction-related topic
  • Two 30-minute case reviews with a panel of multi-disciplinary addiction experts
  • Up to (2) CME/CE credits per session

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, counselors, addiction educators, and other clinicians part of the care team.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the interplay between pain and substance use disorders. 
  2. Summarize the challenges of diagnosing opioid use disorder in patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain. 
  3. Describe strategies for treating pain in patient taking medications for opioid use disorder.

  4. Click Complete GPRA Evaluation and select button be directed to the external GPRA evaluation. Once completed, you must click on the link at the top of the GPRA evaluation to be redirected back to this educational product to complete the attestation, CME evaluation, claim credit and download your certificate.
  5. Click Complete Acknowledgement to attest to completing the GPRA evaluation.
  6. Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window. 
  7. Click Complete Presenter Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback.
  8. Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

Angela L. Colistra

PhD, LPC, CAADC, CCS

Dr. Angela Colistra has been working with individuals managing co-occurring disorders, lending her expertise to therapy, medical training, clinical supervision, education, and research. She is the director of Behavioral Sciences and Associate Medical Director of Community and Practice-Based research for the Department of Family Medicine. She is a faculty with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). A member of the Pennsylvania Advisory Council for Substance Use, offering guidance to the Governor of Pennsylvania and the Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Angie is the owner of Aligned Consulting and Coaching LLC where she provides addiction and BH consulting and coaching. Dr. Colistra is working on her first textbook: Equipping the Interdisciplinary Workforce to Treat Addiction and Behavioral Health: Reducing the Stigma with Springer due out in November of 2024. As a mother of two boys, she is dedicated to advancing addiction and behavioral health prevention and education; hailing from West Virginia this work is a personal and professional calling.

Shanna Diaz, DO

Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in Sleep Medicine, University of New Mexico

Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and sleep medicine. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in Sleep Medicine at UNM and provides locums coverage for psychiatry through UNM Medical Group.

Abby Letcher

MD, FASAM

Abby Letcher MD, FASAM is a Family Physician and Addiction Medicine Specialist in Allentown, PA. As an advocate for community responsive health systems, she was the founding Medical Director of the area's first Federally Qualified Health Center, developed integrated behavioral health and the first primary care program for medications for opioid use disorder, and community oriented Project ECHO for OUD. She partners with local community based organizations to promote Radical Welcome in healthcare, health equity and participatory system change.

Dan Alford MD,MPH

MD, MPH

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education and Director of the Safe and Competent Opioid Prescribing Education (SCOPE of Pain) program at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). He is on staff in the Section of General Internal Medicine and director of the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit at Boston Medical Center (BMC). He is also Medical Director of the Boston University Evidence-based SBIRT Student Training (BESST) Project and the Boston Medical Center’s Massachusetts SBIRT Training and Technical Assistance (MASBIRT TTA) program. He is past-president of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA)He is course director of the BUSM Immersion Training Programs in Addiction Medicine funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). In 2011 he was recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House. In 2014 he received the American Medical Association “Award for Health Education” and in 2016 was awarded the Educator of the Year Award by the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Behavioral Medicine by the American College of Physicians. His clinical, educational and research interests focus on opioid use disorders and safe and competent opioid prescribing for chronic pain.
