Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the growing prevalence of biomedical sequelae of addiction that require acute care and healthcare system challenges that need to be overcome to improve patient care.

Join us as the editor-in-chief of The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition moderates a discussion with expert panelists on the growing prevalence of biomedical sequelae of addiction that require acute care and the healthcare system challenges that need to be overcome to improve patient care. This session will include a discussion of developing a 3.7 BIO program aimed at providing necessary biomedical and SUD care.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  3. Understand the new ASAM Criteria Level 3.7 BIO and its purpose in promoting improved treatment retention and continuity of care

R Corey Waller

MD, MS

R. Corey Waller MD, MS, FACEP, DFASAM is a board-certified and actively practicing addiction and emergency medicine specialist with extensive experience working at the local, state, and national levels. He has works with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and related organizations to advance the evidence-based practice of treatment and recovery for individuals affected by substance use disorder (SUD). A nationally recognized expert in SUD, he is now the Editor in Chief of The ASAM Criteria.

As a principal at the HMA Institute on Addiction, he is directly responsible for consultation regarding addiction treatment system development for hospitals, primary care practices, just involved populations, and addiction treatment providers. He oversees the HMAedu.com learning management system and continues to develop education covering addiction, pain, behavioral health, and the administrative support for those systems.
In his prior role as senior medical director for education and policy at the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs, Dr. Waller was responsible for developing and maintaining all training and in-person technical assistance delivered by the National Center. This covered addiction, pain, behavioral health treatment system development, correctional medicine, payment model implementation, and healthcare policy. 
Before joining the National Center, he worked for the Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a fully integrated health system with 14 hospitals and more than 1,000 employed physicians. Dr. Waller served as medical staff chief of pain medicine to the Spectrum Health Hospital System and medical director of the Spectrum Health Medical Group Center for Integrative Medicine, where he was responsible for treating patients with addiction, including management of pregnant mothers with substance use disorders. Additionally, he oversaw the development of core competencies for addiction treatment in the labor and delivery unit and the neonatal abstinence syndrome treatment algorithm for the Level 1 neonatal intensive care unit. 

Anika Alvanzo

MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP

Anika Alvanzo, MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP is the Eastern Region Medical Director for Pyramid Healthcare, Inc. She also serves as a physician consultant on substance use disorders to the Behavioral Health Administration in the Maryland Department of Health and is the Managing Partner of Uzima Consulting Group, LLC, which provides addiction medicine-related consultation, education and training, and expert witness testimony. Dr. Alvanzo is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Alvanzo is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM, a Past President of the Maryland-DC Society of Addiction Medicine (MDDCSAM), and currently serves as Chair of the ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee and Region V Director for the ASAM Board of Directors.

At Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., Dr. Alvanzo’s role is to optimize and standardize the medical care, with emphasis on substance withdrawal management and pharmacotherapy, in the residential and outpatient addiction treatment programs in Eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Prior to this, Dr. Alvanzo spent twelve years as faculty in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she held a variety of clinical leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director of Addiction Treatment Services and the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy and Medical Director of the Broadway Center for Addiction, comprehensive, outpatient substance use disorder treatment (SUD) programs on the Johns Hopkin Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital campuses, respectively. From 2011 – 2018, Dr. Alvanzo directed the Substance Use Disorders Consultation Service, a multidisciplinary addiction consultation service serving the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine general and subspecialty services.

Dr. Alvanzo has served as an expert on National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), National Quality Forum (NQF) and PEW Research Center panels regarding opioids and integration of recovery-oriented care in various medical settings.

Jason Kirby

DO, MBA, FASAM

Dr. Jason Kirby, DO, MBA, FASAM is a board-certified Addiction Medicine specialist and is currently Chief Medical Officer of Landmark Recovery, a national drug and alcohol residential treatment organization based in Franklin, TN. He is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He has treated thousands of patients in his career struggling from a variety of substance use disorders and practices full time Addiction Medicine for Landmark Recovery. Dr. Kirby is the clinical leader for the organization and is responsible for the development of Landmark's policies and procedures governing evidence based and harm reduction practices as well as liaison for all regulatory matters. 

He also serves in leadership in the American Society of Addiction Medicine as member of the Finance and Level of Care Committees, faculty for ASAM's Opioid Treatment Course, and was granted Fellow status in May 2020. Recently, he was nominated as President - Elect of the Tennessee Chapter of ASAM. Dr. Kirby has spoken at a variety of conferences and given lectures and grand rounds focusing on diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of substance use disorders and other process addictions in special populations. 

Dr. Kirby has a deep personal passion for helping patients who use substances to regain functionality in their lives and enter programs of recovery.

Debra Nussbaum

PhD, LCSW

Debra Nussbaum, PhD, LCSW Sr. Director, Behavioral Product Optum/UHC Deb started with Optum in 2009 as Director of Clinical Operations.  In 2013 Deb moved into national role as a Sr. Director of Behavioral Health Product. Deb is a co-founder and clinical lead for Optum’s national substance use disorder (SUD) initiatives. Deb has successfully championed many projects within Optum designed to improve member access to evidence based services, the development of the nation’s largest MAT network and the 24/7 SUD helpline and live chat capabilities. Debra’s clinical background has been primarily in substance use services in progressive leadership roles managing and developing treatment programs aimed at improving outcomes in addiction treatment services. Deb has a PhD in organizational psychology and is an LCSW licensed in Florida and in New York.
