Live Course

Overview

This 7-hour, live, in-person course provides a review of the essential topics from the ASAM Criteria Foundations Course and the ASAM Criteria Utilization Management Course. The course is designed to ensure a full spectrum of services and to confirm the proper implementation of the ASAM Criteria.

The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

Clinicians and practitioners who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

This course covers the following ACGME CompetenciesPatient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, and Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

  1. Challenge common misconceptions when interpreting the research-validated ASAM Criteria.
  2. Apply an accurate interpretation of the research validated ASAM Criteria to improve consistency in developing treatment plans.
  3. Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on The ASAM Criteria.
  4. Examine the guiding principles of The ASAM Criteria and the role of the providers and payers in its system-wide implementation.

Christine R. Mulford

RN, MSN, FNP-BC

Christine is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner who brings experience in primary care, mental health care, and clinical leadership to the practice of addition medicine. She has been a member of care teams across the outpatient continuum of care as well as a leader of an inpatient withdrawal management unit. Currently, she practices addiction medicine via telemedicine, which allows her to expand access to patients across twelve states.

Christine received her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 1999. She is a current member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), and the America Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Since 2019, she has served as an ASAM Faculty member, facilitating Criteria and CONTINUUM courses for a diverse population of learners internationally.

She resides in Scottsdale, Arizona and enjoys live music, sporting events, and all small fuzzy dogs.

John Smith

Ph.D., LCSW

Dr. John Smith is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW #19868 CA & LCSW #34000248A IN) and is the former Director of Education and Training at Social Model Recovery Systems. He is a Professor Emeritus of Addiction Counseling at Mt. San Antonio College in California and he has been in Private Practice since 2000 specializing in treating Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma.

He is an ASAM training faculty member and regularly conducts ASAM Criteria and Skill Building courses. He serves as a Subject Matter Expert on several ASAM projects and advisory groups.

He is also the author of “Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders: A Practitioner’s Guide” and he is the “Best-Selling” author of “The Authentic Man: A Guide to Happiness and Purpose”.
