    Overview

    This 8-hour virtual-live course expands on the content discussed within the ASAM Criteria One-Day Foundations course and provides an in-depth understanding of developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating initial reviews and continued stay reviews, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment.  

    The ASAM Criteria Skill Building Course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and explore their role in constructing a full range of services for the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). The Course builds on the foundational concepts of The ASAM Criteria that will offer practical guidelines to drive objective decision making and ensure fidelity to The ASAM Criteria. Using a practical and case-based approach, participants will explore important considerations in developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating progress versus nonprogress in treatment, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment. Further, the training will provide tools and resources to equip healthcare providers to work effectively in managed care settings and explore how case shaping can drive patients' overall quality of care.

    The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Examine the guiding principles of the ASAM Criteria and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation
    2. Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions based on imminent danger and immediate needs, as defined in the ASAM Criteria
    3. Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate in accordance with the ASAM Criteria
    4. Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on the ASAM Criteria to drive ongoing evidence-based care
    5. Implement a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers using common terminology of the ASAM Criteria to ensure patient-centered care
    6. Examine implementation challenges and develop strategies to provide appropriate treatment for patients with SUDs

    Tiffany Lee

    PhD, LPC, CAADC

    Dr. Tiffany Lee is a Professor at Western Michigan University(WMU) and the Director of the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse. From21-23, Dr. Lee was the Chair of the School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs at WMU. She has over 15 years of experience in the field of addiction, primarily as a counselor and court advocate. Her grant activities and researchinterests primary focus on addiction training in various medical and mental health professions.

    Dr. Lee recently published a second edition of a textbook on diversity issues in addiction treatment and has served on the Michigan Health Professionals Recovery Committee. In that capacity, she worked closely working with the Attorney General's office for several years to update policies for the recovery program in the state. Dr. Lee received her B.S. in Psychology from the Univ. of Florida, M.A. in Community Counseling from the Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham, and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from WMU.  

    She enjoys spending time with her young son and partner, especially when it includes any time on the water or camping. She is also a huge college football fan.

    Joseph Kuchenbuch

    MA, LLP, CAADC, CCS-M

    Joe has worked in field of clinical mental health and substance use disorder services for the past 36 years and the juvenile justice system for 8 years previously. He possesses a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Albion College and a Master of Arts degree in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University. Additionally, he is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor and a Certified Clinical Supervisor through the Michigan Credentialing Board for Addiction Professionals.

    Joe is currently the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Western Michigan University. In addition to his administrative role, Joe provides clinical supervision as well as providing assessment, group, and individual counseling services. During his career, Joe has worked with both the adolescent and adult populations and more recently he worked closely with a member of the WMU/Unified Clinics to establish a Dog-Assisted Therapy clinic.

    Joe resides in Portage, Michigan with his spouse of 28 years and together they raised two adult sons. He is an avid snow skier, scuba diver, and is currently trying to learn how to play a social game of golf after years of not playing due to school and work.

    The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

    The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

    Overview

    This 6-hour, live course provides the education needed for prescribing clinicians to strengthen skills in partnering with treatment court and advocating for patients who are involved in treatment court. The course will include didactive presentations, small group discussions, FAQs, and challenging case studies. 

    ASAM is partnering with All Rise through an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) grant initiative to allow medical providers active with and new to the drug treatment court field access to training to help guide them in successful integration of services for individuals with substance use disorders involved in the justice system.

    The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who practice addiction medicine and interact with treatment courts and other aspects of the justice system. 

    This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Based Knowledge, Practice Based Learning, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism and Systems-based Practice.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion, learners will be able to:

    1. Describe ways to reduce stigma against people with substance use disorders, including the use of accurate terminology. 
    2. Explain the role of timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment for clients/participants first engaging in treatment courts.
    3. Define addiction as a chronic and manageable disease.
    4. Describe the purpose, structure, and effectiveness of treatment courts.
    5. Define the roles and responsibilities of treatment court team members.
    6. Describe the roles and responsibilities of medical providers within treatment court settings. 
    7. Apply best clinical and partnership practices to case examples of patients who are engaged in treatment court and addiction treatment.
    8. Advocate effectively for access to evidence-based treatment with treatment court team members. 
    9. Coordinate care within professional settings to individuals involved in treatment courts.

    Elizabeth M. Salisbury-Afshar

    MD, MPH, FAAFP, FACPM, DFASAM

    Dr.Salisbury-Afshar is an Associate Professor at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. Her work focuses on improving the health and wellbeing ofpeople who use drugs and alcohol. She is a physician who is board-certified inaddiction medicine, family medicine, and preventive medicine/general publichealth, and her expertise lies at the intersection of these fields. Her workincludes patient care, teaching, public health practice, and research relatedto implementation and evaluation of addiction treatment and harm reductionprograms. Dr. Salisbury-Afshar serves as the Program Director of the PreventiveMedicine Residency and as the Medical Director of Harm Reduction Services forthe Wisconsin Department of Health Services Division of Public Health. She has overfourteen years of experience working clinically in federally qualified healthcenters. Her current clinical work includes  serving as Medical Directorof a low barrier clinic for people who use drugs and as a physician on theaddiction medicine consult team at UW Hospital. She is also core faculty in theUW Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program.

    Debra Newman

    PA-C, MPAS, MPH

    Debra R. Newman, PA-C, MSPAS, MPH served as the Medical Practitioner for Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts in Santa Fe County, New Mexico for the over six years, and currently provides training and technical assistance for the NM Department of Therapeutic Justice. She formerly served in this role for the Rio Arriba (NM) Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts, and the Santa Fe County DWI Court. Debra was a 2017-2018recipient of the PA Foundation/NIDA-CTN Mentored Outreach Award in Treatment Dissemination: “Utilizing Psychiatric PA’s in Drug/Treatment Courts.”

    Her passion for addiction medicine began with her association with Project ECHO while employed at a large FQHC in northern NM more than 15 years ago, a region historically plagued with the highest per capita heroin overdose death rate in the nation. Debra worked as the only full-time provider for patients struggling with SUDs.

    Debra is the only PA to serve as a Lead Mentor for the Provider Clinical Support System (PCSS and serves as a Co-Editor for ASAM Weekly.

    In her current role with Encompass Community Services, a non-profit organization in Santa Cruz, CA that provides services in behavioral health and family andsocial well-being, she is Lead Provider for outpatient SUD services.

    Meghan Wheeler

    MS

    AllRise/Treatment Court Institute

    Meghan Wheeler is the director of standards and conference programming for AllRise/Treatment Court Institute. She is responsible for developing training, technical assistance, and tools to support the implementation of best practice standards for treatment court models and also assists in the development of best practice standards. In her 18-year tenure with All Rise, she has served as project director and senior consultant on the Adult Drug Court Planning and Training Initiatives, Statewide Training and Technical Assistance, and Family Treatment Court Planning and Training Initiatives. She has provided training and technical assistance to treatment courts nationwide. Prior to her work with All Rise, she managed the statewide treatment court implementation for the Supreme Court of Ohio, worked at the local level as a treatment court coordinator, and served as a counselor and clinical supervisor for a residential substance use treatment facility. Ms. Wheeler has national, state, and local experience in the justice, treatment, child welfare, and social services fields related to clinical intervention, supervision, case management, policy development, program management, grant writing, and curriculum design. She previously was an adjunct professor at Ashland University in the area of alcoholism and substance use. She received her master's degree in administration of justice, a bachelor's in psychology, and a bachelor's in criminal justice from Mercyhurst University.

    Soumya Pandalai

    MD, FACP, DFASAM

    Dr. Soumya L. Pandalai is a board certified physician in the field of Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She currently works at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) in Phoenix, Arizona as a specialist in Addiction Medicine and provides both inpatient consultation services and outpatient treatmentr to persons with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Dr. Pandalai enjoys the clinical practice of Addiction Medicine and finds the neuroscience of addiction to be intellectually stimulating and challenging to observe the health-effects that can result from various aspects of human behavior. It is also immensely rewarding to connect with patients at different stages of their recovery process and help them along their path toward healing. She hopes to inspire people to view addiction from a different lens and apply principles of substance use and reward pathways to general aspects of human motivation and other medical illnesses. Dr. Pandalai is proud and grateful to work with an interdisciplinary team of hospital staff, social workers, counselors and other medical providers to create a more inclusive and health-focused model for substance use treatment, chronic pain and use of treatment options like tele-health to advance the care of vulnerable patient populations.

    Steve Hanson

    MS Ed

    Steve Hanson, M.S. Ed., is a Senior Treatment Consultant for AllRise/Treatment Court Institute. Having been a faculty member for AllRise (founded as National Association of Drug Court Professionals in 1994) for over 20 years, Mr. Hanson began his current role in January of 2023. 

    Previously, he served as the Associate Commissioner for Courts and Criminal Justice for the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. He was responsible for relationships with the various criminal justice entities including Drug Courts, State and local corrections, probation and parole. Previously he had served as the Associate Commissioner of Treatment for OASAS with responsibilities for the oversight of state operated treatment programs, adolescent services, criminal justice and Recovery services.

    He taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in Psychopharmacology at SUNY Brockport for 20 years.

    Steve has over 40 years of experience in the field as a treatment provider, educator and consultant. His ability to train criminal justice practitioners on drug abuse and treatment has been recognized both nationally and internationally.

    Debra Newman

    PA-C, MPAS, MPH

    Debra R. Newman, PA-C, MSPAS, MPH served as the Medical Practitioner for Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts in Santa Fe County, New Mexico for the over six years, and currently provides training and technical assistance for the NM Department of Therapeutic Justice. She formerly served in this role for the Rio Arriba (NM) Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts, and the Santa Fe County DWI Court. Debra was a 2017-2018recipient of the PA Foundation/NIDA-CTN Mentored Outreach Award in Treatment Dissemination: “Utilizing Psychiatric PA’s in Drug/Treatment Courts.”

    Her passion for addiction medicine began with her association with Project ECHO while employed at a large FQHC in northern NM more than 15 years ago, a region historically plagued with the highest per capita heroin overdose death rate in the nation. Debra worked as the only full-time provider for patients struggling with SUDs.

    Debra is the only PA to serve as a Lead Mentor for the Provider Clinical Support System (PCSS and serves as a Co-Editor for ASAM Weekly.

    In her current role with Encompass Community Services, a non-profit organization in Santa Cruz, CA that provides services in behavioral health and family andsocial well-being, she is Lead Provider for outpatient SUD services.

    Meghan Wheeler

    AllRise/Treatment Court Institute

    Meghan Wheeler is the director of standards and conference programming for AllRise/Treatment Court Institute. She is responsible for developing training, technical assistance, and tools to support the implementation of best practice standards for treatment court models and also assists in the development of best practice standards. In her 18-year tenure with All Rise, she has served as project director and senior consultant on the Adult Drug Court Planning and Training Initiatives, Statewide Training and Technical Assistance, and Family Treatment Court Planning and Training Initiatives. She has provided training and technical assistance to treatment courts nationwide. Prior to her work with All Rise, she managed the statewide treatment court implementation for the Supreme Court of Ohio, worked at the local level as a treatment court coordinator, and served as a counselor and clinical supervisor for a residential substance use treatment facility. Ms. Wheeler has national, state, and local experience in the justice, treatment, child welfare, and social services fields related to clinical intervention, supervision, case management, policy development, program management, grant writing, and curriculum design. She previously was an adjunct professor at Ashland University in the area of alcoholism and substance use. She received her master's degree in administration of justice, a bachelor's in psychology, and a bachelor's in criminal justice from Mercyhurst University.

    Soumya Pandalai

    MD, FACP, DFASAM

    Dr. Soumya L. Pandalai is a board certified physician in the field of Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. She currently works at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) in Phoenix, Arizona as a specialist in Addiction Medicine and provides both inpatient consultation services and outpatient treatmentr to persons with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Dr. Pandalai enjoys the clinical practice of Addiction Medicine and finds the neuroscience of addiction to be intellectually stimulating and challenging to observe the health-effects that can result from various aspects of human behavior. It is also immensely rewarding to connect with patients at different stages of their recovery process and help them along their path toward healing. She hopes to inspire people to view addiction from a different lens and apply principles of substance use and reward pathways to general aspects of human motivation and other medical illnesses. Dr. Pandalai is proud and grateful to work with an interdisciplinary team of hospital staff, social workers, counselors and other medical providers to create a more inclusive and health-focused model for substance use treatment, chronic pain and use of treatment options like tele-health to advance the care of vulnerable patient populations.

    Steve Hanson

    Steve Hanson, M.S. Ed., is a Senior Treatment Consultant for AllRise/Treatment Court Institute. Having been a faculty member for AllRise (founded as National Association of Drug Court Professionals in 1994) for over 20 years, Mr. Hanson began his current role in January of 2023. 

    Previously, he served as the Associate Commissioner for Courts and Criminal Justice for the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. He was responsible for relationships with the various criminal justice entities including Drug Courts, State and local corrections, probation and parole. Previously he had served as the Associate Commissioner of Treatment for OASAS with responsibilities for the oversight of state operated treatment programs, adolescent services, criminal justice and Recovery services.

    He taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in Psychopharmacology at SUNY Brockport for 20 years.

    Steve has over 40 years of experience in the field as a treatment provider, educator and consultant. His ability to train criminal justice practitioners on drug abuse and treatment has been recognized both nationally and internationally.

    The ASAM Criteria Skill Building Course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and explore their role in constructing a full range of services for the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). The Course builds on the foundational concepts of The ASAM Criteria that will offer practical guidelines to drive objective decision making and ensure fidelity to The ASAM Criteria. Using a practical and case-based approach, participants will explore important considerations in developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating progress versus nonprogress in treatment, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment. Further, the training will provide tools and resources to equip healthcare providers to work effectively in managed care settings and explore how case shaping can drive patients' overall quality of care.

    The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

    1. Examine the guiding principles of the ASAM Criteria and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation
    2. Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions based on imminent danger and immediate needs, as defined in the ASAM Criteria
    3. Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate in accordance with the ASAM Criteria
    4. Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on the ASAM Criteria to drive ongoing evidence-based care

    PhD, MBA

    Dr. Briick has been in the field of addiction medicine since1986. She began her career as a certified drug addiction counselor and nowspends her time assisting treatments centers in applying best practices totheir treatment continuum. It is because of that early work that she learnedthe value of providing individualized care to clients and the connection toreturn to use, healing family systems, and payer sources. 

    Through her independent consulting firm, located in the MetroAtlanta area, she works with small to mid-size treatment programs from acrossthe United States. The focus of her work centers around licensure, clinicalcompetency, and best practices including utilizing the ASAM criteria during thetreatment process.

     Dr. Briick graduated with honors from Cappella Universitywhere she earned a PhD in healthcare administration. She also holds an MBA anda Bachelor of Science in rehabilitation.     This 8-hour virtual-live course is the recommended first step to understanding the ASAM Criteria and covers developing patient-centered service plans as well as making objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions. 

    The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

    The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.

    Jasleen Salwan

    MD, MPH

    Dr. Salwan is a board-certified internal medicine and addiction medicine physician. She is an Attending Physician in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Montgomery Family and Internal Medicine Associates in Silver Spring, Maryland. She trained at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, earning an MPH concurrently with her MD before pursuing her residency at the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Program. 

    She subsequently completed an Addiction Medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Since July 2020, she has been providing integrated primary care and substance use disorder treatment, as well as Hepatitis C treatment, at a private practice in Silver Spring. Dr. Salwan's interests include collaborative care models, social justice, and provider wellness.     Joe has worked in field of clinical mental health and substance use disorder services for the past 36 years and the juvenile justice system for 8 years previously. He possesses a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Albion College and a Master of Arts degree in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University. Additionally, he is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor and a Certified Clinical Supervisor through the Michigan Credentialing Board for Addiction Professionals.

    Joe is currently the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Western Michigan University. In addition to his administrative role, Joe provides clinical supervision as well as providing assessment, group, and individual counseling services. During his career, Joe has worked with both the adolescent and adult populations and more recently he worked closely with a member of the WMU/Unified Clinics to establish a Dog-Assisted Therapy clinic.

    Joe resides in Portage, Michigan with his spouse of 28 years and together they raised two adult sons. He is an avid snow skier, scuba diver, and is currently trying to learn how to play a social game of golf after years of not playing due to school and work.

    The ASAM Criteria Foundations Course content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups. 

    The ASAM Criteria Skill Building Course is designed to help healthcare professionals develop a holistic understanding of The ASAM Criteria and explore their role in constructing a full range of services for the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). The Course builds on the foundational concepts of The ASAM Criteria that will offer practical guidelines to drive objective decision making and ensure fidelity to The ASAM Criteria. Using a practical and case-based approach, participants will explore important considerations in developing individualized treatment plans, evaluating progress versus nonprogress in treatment, and determining when it is appropriate to initiate transfer or discharge of a patient from treatment.

    The target audience for this beginner, intermediate, and advanced course include: counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria.
    2. Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment.
    3. Determine treatment priorities based on risk assessment to guide treatment and service planning.
    4. Determine an appropriate level of care and treatment priorities based on risk assessment.
    5. Implement the ASAM Criteria, in the context of system challenges, for patients with addiction to ensure appropriate level of care and treatment outcomes.
    6. Examine the guiding principles of the ASAM Criteria and the payer’s role in its system-wide implementation
    7. Evaluate patient risk ratings across the six dimensions based on imminent danger and immediate needs, as defined in the ASAM Criteria
    8. Evaluate treatment plans and clinical assessments to determine if the requested level of care is appropriate in accordance with the ASAM Criteria
    9. Conduct objective, comprehensive clinical case reviews (and re-reviews) based on the ASAM Criteria to drive ongoing evidence-based care
    10. Implement a collaborative process between treatment providers and payers using common terminology of the ASAM Criteria to ensure patient-centered care

    Join our 4-session online case-based learning collaborative series focused on treating opioid use disorder. Delve into best practices on OUD and Pregnancy and explore real-world cases provided by addiction experts, applying knowledge to practical situations. Each session is presented live online and spans 1.5 hours. 

    Designed for healthcare team members new to treating patients with opioid use disorder, the series aims to offer additional insights, knowledge, and confidence. 

    These 1.5-hour sessions include: 

    • One 40-minute didactic presentation on a featured OUD topic followed by Q&A 
    • A 15-minute Real-world Case Scenario & Discussion led by addiction experts 
    • Learner case discussion and Q&A 
    • Up to 1.5 credits per session 

    The target audience for this introductory level activity includes physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, counselors, addiction educators, and other clinicians part of the care team.

    MD

    Dr. Robert Sherrick, MD, FASAM, is Chief Medical Officer for Community Medical Services, a company that serves patients through over 40 Opioid Treatment Programs in 9 states. He also works at an inpatient addiction treatment facility in Kalispell, Pathways Treatment Center, treating all forms of Substance Use Disorders and dual diagnosis patients.

    Dr. Sherrick has been providing Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder since 2003, initially in an office setting using buprenorphine and subsequently with methadone in Opioid Treatment Programs. He established a state-wide buprenorphine treatment program for VA Montana with extensive use of telemedicine. He is board certified in Addiction Medicine through the American Board of Preventative Medicine. He is currently the President of the Northwest Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

    Kathryn M. Basques

    MSW, MSN, APN, PMHNP-BC

    Kathryn M. Basques, MSW, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC is a psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry. After completing her education at Yale School of Nursing, she started her career at Yale-New Haven Hospital on the first pro-active psychiatric consult service. From 2015-2020, she worked at Rush University Medical Center as the Co- Director of the Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT) and dedicated herself to promoting early identification of substance use disorders, implementation of an SBIRT model of care on the inpatient units and improving the management of opioid and alcohol withdrawal syndromes. Since moving to Providence, RI in 2021, Kathryn was first within the Lifespan Hospital System, continuing to work in a combined inpatient and outpatient, co-occurring clinical role. She is currently the Lead Psychiatry Provider for CODAC, an OTP and comprehensive substance use treatment program with locations throughout Rhode Island. Her areas of interest remain advocating for harm reduction policies in the treatment setting, motivational interviewing, and management of co-occurring syndromes.

    Overview

    The ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine is an 8-hour, two-day, innovative, case-based workshop designed for providers who are relatively new to the field of addiction medicine, such as primary care physicians, clinicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and behavioral health specialists, who see patients at risk for or with addiction. 

    Addiction as a disease continues to cost the global community a staggering amount both financially and in lives lost, but there are treatments available to help patients. Participants of this workshop will learn more about addiction medicine and how to screen, diagnose, treat, and/or refer patients with addiction – many of whom have co-occurring medical and psychiatric comorbidities.

    This is a practical, case-based course designed to be interactive and engaging. The course is designed to empower primary care and other providers to diagnose and treat patients at risk for, or with addiction, by translating the signs of the disease of addiction into transformative, positive outcomes for patients.

    The target audience for this beginner level workshop include: physicians, nurse practitioners/nurses, physician assistants, counselors, and other healthcare providers.  Clinicians who see patients with addiction in primary care, emergency/urgent care, treatment center, or general psychiatry settings. 

    The ACGME competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

    • The Clinical Manifestations of the Neurobiology of Addiction
    • Brief Overview of Motivational Interviewing Basics
    • Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
    • Identifying Unhealthy Substance Use: Assessment
    • Treating Substance Use Disorders with Medication and Counseling

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion, learners will be able to:

    1. Identify one's own feelings and attitudes that promote or prevent therapeutic responses to patients with substance use disorders.
    2. Apply the philosophy of harm reduction to enhance patient centered care for people with substance use disorders.
    3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the neurobiological changes that occur during addictions.
    4. Use motivational interviewing to enhance patient’s readiness to change unhealthy behaviors.
    5. Use validated patient screening tools to detect substance use and interpret a spectrum of results.
    6. Conduct substance use assessments using the DSM 5 criteria and including a biopsychosocial approach.
    7. Offer evidence-based pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions that are appropriate to specific substances and usage patterns.

    Daniel A. Nauts

    MD, FASAM

    Daniel A. Nauts, MD, FASAM completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan and joined an internal medicine group practice in Bellingham, Washington.  He left general internal medicine to develop his Addiction Medicine practice; since that time, he has been instrumental in the creation of 3 inpatient programs for those suffering with substance use and co-occurring disorders, outpatient SUD programs, and medication assisted treatment services. 

    Dr. Nauts is an independent contractor for the Montana Primary Care Association providing MAT waiver trainings and technical assistance, community forums on opioid use disorders, academic detailing activities for MAT providers, and helping in strategies to taper patients off high dose morphine equivalents.  Not only is he committed to integrating addiction medicine into primary care but also in promoting the development of more addiction medicine specialists in Montana.

    He is active in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), delivers a myriad of presentations for any professional or public audience, has participated in addressing physician and nurse health issues through Professional Assistance Programs, and has provided Addiction Medicine experiences for residents of the Western Montana Family Practice Program and PA students from the University of Washington Medex Program.

    He is a member of the Drug Utilization Board of Mountain Pacific Quality Health providing oversight to the Medicaid formulary, is recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM), and is certified in the subspecialty of Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.  He is the treasurer for the Northwest Society of Addiction Medicine, a Chapter of American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) representing Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming and is a faculty member of ASAM to provide Data 2000 MAT waiver trainings and The Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine.

    Dr. Nauts is the 2019 recipient of the Award of Merit presented by the Montana Medical Association honoring the work he has done to improve healthcare in Montana.

    Robert Sherrick

    MD, FASAM

    Dr. Robert Sherrick, MD, FASAM, is Chief Medical Officer for Community Medical Services, a company that serves patients through its 30 Opioid Treatment Programs in 8 different states.  Dr. Sherrick completed medical training and residency in Internal Medicine at George Washington University.  After 5 years on the faculty at George Washington,he moved to Montana to join a private practice in Internal Medicine.  Since 1994, Dr. Sherrick has worked at an inpatient addiction treatment facility, Pathways, where he has treated all forms of Substance Use Disorders and has served as the CD Medical Director. Dr. Sherrick has been providing Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder since 2003, initially in an office setting using buprenorphine and naltrexone.  In 2009, Dr. Sherrick closed his private practice and moved to VA Montana.  Over the next 7 years at VA Montana he developed a state-wide MAT program that was one of the first uses of telemedicine for providing MAT to rural areas.  Dr. Sherrick has been working for Community Medical Services since 2010, providing MAT services with methadone, buprenorphine, and naloxone as well as serving as Northern Medical Director.  He has been Chief Medical Officer for the last year.  He is currently the President of the Northwest Chapter of ASAM. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine through the American Board of Preventative Medicine.

    Gina Pate-Terry

    LCSW, LAC

    Gina Pate-Terry, LCSW, LAC is the Integrated Behavioral Health Lead with the Montana Primary Care Association. She has over 20 years of experience working in the fields of mental health and addiction. Gina’s work experience includes, Clinical Supervisor of Butte Silver Bow County’s Chemical Dependency Services, Consulting Member of Butte Family Drug Court, Adjunct Professor at University of Montana at Montana Tech, Administrator of Montana Chemical Dependency Center, Independent Private Practice and Grant Consultant and Behavioral Health Therapist at Southwest Montana Community Health Center.  She is a graduate of Montana Tech’s Liberal Studies program and received their Montana Tech Outstanding Alumni Award in 2008. She has a master’s degree in social work from Walla Walla College, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Addiction Counselor.
