Prescription to Patient: Understanding and Improving Access to MOUD
Recorded: September 27, 2026
On-Demand Webinar
Overview
Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), including buprenorphine, are among the most effective evidence-based interventions for reducing opioid-related morbidity and mortality. Yet, many patients continue to experience delays or obstacles in accessing treatment due to a complex combination of operational, regulatory, pharmacy, distribution, and policy-related challenges. Improving access requires a shared understanding of the factors that influence the journey from prescription to patient and the roles of the many stakeholders involved in the medication supply chain.
This live webinar will examine the current landscape of access to buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) and explore barriers that can impede timely treatment for individuals with OUD. Faculty will discuss how federal and state policies, evolving regulatory requirements, and opioid settlement initiatives affect prescribing, dispensing, and delivery of MOUD across the continuum of care. Participants will also examine the impact of stigma, misconceptions, and workflow challenges on treatment access and patient engagement.
Through a multidisciplinary lens, this session will highlight practical strategies for improving coordination and collaboration among prescribers, pharmacists, distributors, policymakers, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders. By addressing both systemic and operational barriers, participants will gain insights into opportunities to support timely access to evidence-based treatment while promoting patient safety, appropriate clinical oversight, and improved outcomes for individuals with OUD.
This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, advanced practice clinicians, social workers, counselors, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team involved in the treatment of patients with OUD.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
Describe current barriers to patient access to buprenorphine, including operational, pharmacy, distribution, regulatory, and policy factors that influence treatment availability.
Discuss how federal and state policies, regulatory requirements, and opioid settlement initiatives affect the prescribing, dispensing, and delivery of buprenorphine across the care continuum.
Identify strategies to address stigma, misconceptions, and operational challenges that contribute to barriers in accessing evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder.
Develop opportunities for collaboration among prescribers, pharmacists, distributors, policymakers, and other stakeholders to improve timely patient access to MOUD while supporting patient safety and appropriate clinical oversight.
This workshop is hosted by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the National Community Pharmacists Association, the American Pharmacists Association, and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy®.
