Overview

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference offers specific ways in which clinicians can ask hard questions from the standpoint of cultural humility to gain necessary competence in working with individual with historical and intergenerational trauma.

Research on the impact trauma has on families and offspring goes back decades and includes trauma caused by war, genocide, class struggles, and racism. Helping professionals, such as psychologists, therapists, and other care experts tend to lack understanding that these kinds of traumas can have on patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD). This session examines the treatment of trauma based on cultural identity or race and includes strategies clinicians can use with patients with historical, international, or racial trauma to help patients build resilience in their recovery process.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Medical Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Be able to describe research that demonstrates the impact of historic and intergenerational trauma on brain development and health risks later in life
  2. Understand the racial underpinnings of the lived experiences of BIPOC clients and communities
  3. Identify ways to explore the lived experience of BIPOC clients and be able to connect with cultural norms and values

Carolyn C. Ross

MD, MPH, CEDS

Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, CEDS is an author, speaker, expert in using Integrative Medicine for the treatment of food and body image issues and addictions. She is the CEO of The Anchor Program™, a non-diet online (telemedicine) program for individuals with binge eating disorder, emotional eating and food addiction. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine and also in Addiction Medicine and is a graduate of Dr. Andrew Weil’s fellowship in Integrative Medicine. Dr. Ross is the former head of the eating disorder program at Sierra Tucson and has served as a consultant to multiple treatment programs at all levels of care on the treatment of eating disorders and addictions. 

For the past 4 years, Dr. Ross has been an international speaker and consultant on issues of cultural competence, antiracism and diversity in mental health with a particular emphasis on the treatment of eating disorders in women of color. Dr. Ross also gave a TEDxPleasantGrove talk on “Historical and Intergenerational Trauma in January, 2020. She is the co-chair of the AAEDP-BIPOC (African American Eating Disorder Professionals – Black Indigenous People of Color) subcommittee of iaedp (International Eating Disorder Professional). She is the author of 3 books on eating disorders, the most recent is “The Food Addiction Recovery Workbook.” She is a contributing author to the recently released book: “Treating Black Women with Eating Disorders: A Clinician’s Guide.” She is co-founder of the Institute for Antiracism and Equity – a consulting group that works with University counseling centers, treatment centers and other facilities offering mental health care - training staff and health care professionals - to make culturally competent mental health care more available and accessible to black, indigent and other people of color.
