PCSS MOUD Online Case-based Learning Collaboratives Session 3: Managing Opioid Withdrawal in the Era of Medetomidine

Overview
Join our 4-session online case-based learning collaborative series focused on treating opioid use disorder. Delve into the emerging prevalence of medetomidine within the drug supply and strategies to manage medetomidine-opioid withdrawal syndrome and explore real-world cases provided by addiction experts, applying knowledge to practical situations. Each session is presented live online and spans 1.5 hours. Designed for healthcare team members new to treating patients with opioid use disorder and opioid withdrawal, the series aims to offer additional insights, knowledge, and confidence.
These 1.5-hour sessions include:
One 40-minute didactic presentation on a featured OUD topic followed by Q&A
A 15-minute real-world case scenario and discussion led by addiction experts
Learner case discussion and Q&A
Up to 1.5 credits per session
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, counselors, addiction educators, and other clinicians part of the care team.
This activity addresses the following ACGME/IOM/IPCE Competencies: Patient-centered Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practices, Employ Evidence-based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
Describe the pharmacology and presentation of the medetomidine-opioid withdrawal syndrome.
Highlight prevalence within drug supply/geographic differences.
Discuss strategies to manage opioid/medetomidine withdrawal.
Discuss case examples of medetomidine-opioid withdrawal syndrome, highlighting common challenges, gaps in evidence, and practical approaches.

The Providers Clinical Support System-Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (PCSS-MOUD) is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). It is led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) in collaboration with a wide coalition of national professional and healthcare organizations. PCSS-MOUD aims to increase the knowledge and skills of healthcare and counseling professionals about available evidence-based treatment approaches for substance use disorder (SUD) with a particular focus on opioid use disorder (OUD). PCSS-MOUD provides free training and mentoring to practitioners on the use of medications for OUD (MOUD) and the integration of these services into mainstream health care.

Dr. Jeanmarie Perrone, MD
Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Jeanmarie Perrone, MD is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Director of the Division of Medical Toxicology and the founding Director of the Center for Addiction Medicine and Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.Dr. Perrone has led numerous investigations and initiatives in opioid stewardship and ED treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) with buprenorphine.She serves on several regional and national task forces and advisory committees with the State of Pennsylvania, the CDC and FDA addressing judicious opioid use and MOUD treatment access. She has advocated at the state and national level for harm reduction and ED treatment for OUD and is aco-investigator in a 30 site NIDA sponsored trial of ED buprenorphine.Dr. Perrone has been featured in prominent news media including the New York Times, USA Today and National Public Radio and published in the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA . She has won numerous awards for education and mentorship of students, residents and fellows and is boarded in emergency medicine, medical toxicology and addiction medicine.

Bridget Durkin, MD, MBE
Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
Bridget R. Durkin, MD, MBE is trained in addiction medicine and bioethics, and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
There, she serves on the Opioid Use Disorder Workgroup of the Penn Medicine Opioid Task Force. She is also a member of the multidisciplinary hospital Ethics Committee. She completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. She trained in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she also obtained a master’s degree in Bioethics. Her interests include interdisciplinary medical education on clinical ethics, substance use disorders, and palliative care. She is passionate about supporting vulnerable patients, especially those living with substance use disorders and comorbid serious illness.

Kathryn M. Basques (Moderator)
MSW, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC
Kathryn M. Basques is a psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry. After completing her education at Yale School of Nursing, she started her career at Yale-New Haven Hospital on the first pro-active psychiatric consult service. From 2015-2020, she worked at Rush University Medical Center as the Co-Director of the Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT) and dedicated herself to promoting the early identification of substance use disorders, implementation of an SBIRT model of care in the inpatient units, and improving the management of opioid and alcohol withdrawal syndromes. Since moving to Providence, RI, in 2021, Kathryn was first within the Lifespan Hospital System, continuing to work in a combined inpatient and outpatient, co-occurring clinical role. She is currently the Lead Psychiatry Provider for CODAC, an OTP and comprehensive substance use treatment program with locations throughout Rhode Island. Her areas of interest remain advocating for harm reduction policies in the treatment setting, motivational interviewing, and management of co-occurring syndromes.
In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
