Overview

This 2.5-hour, live in-person course as part of the Montana Primary Care Association's Addiction Medicine Network Meeting covers the latest science, clinical guidelines, and policies around pain and opioids and provides the tools you need to implement evidence-based pain treatment.

The CO*RE/ASAM Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits curriculum is newly updated to reflect the latest information in this vital area of healthcare. The thoroughly revised curriculum addresses: the nature and pathophysiology of pain; assessing patients in pain; creating a pain treatment plan; initiating opioid therapy; managing patients on opioid analgesics; educating patients and caregivers; and understanding opioid use disorder. This program meets many states requirements for opioid education and is fully compliant with the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) education requirement (“Blue Print”), issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in September 2018. 

The misuse of opioids is a major public health problem. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the following:

• From 1999 to 2016 more than 630,000 people died from drug overdoses.
• 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: all prescribers of ER/LA opioids which includes pain specialists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, dentists, addiction medicine physicians, psychiatrists and other physicians and clinicians.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Based Knowledge, Practice Based Learning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Describe the pathophysiology of pain as it relates to the concepts of pain management
2. Accurately assess patients in pain
3. Develop a safe and effective pain treatment plan
4. Identify evidence-based non-opioid options for the treatment of pain
5. Identify the risks and benefits of opioid therapy
6. Manage ongoing opioid therapy
7. Recognize behaviors that may be associated with opioid use disorder

2. Click Complete Post Test to answer multiple choice questions. Participants will have 10 attempts to pass and must answer 10 out of 14 questions correctly.
3. Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window. 
4. Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM e-Learning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)
The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) has approved this activity for a maximum of 2.5 credits towards ABPM MOC Part II requirements.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
This activity contributes to the CME component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s redesigned Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology TM (MOCA®) program, known as MOCA 2.0®.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn a maximum of 2.5 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 2.5 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credits.

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
Successful completion of this CME activity can be used to satisfy the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s (ABPN) CME requirement for Maintenance of Certification program. 

American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM)
Successful completion of this activity can be used to satisfy the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) Tmoc credit requirements.
