Overview

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference discusses care and outcomes in pregnant and postpartum individuals using methamphetamines in pregnancy.

The processes of prenatal and addiction care for individuals with methamphetamine use are made complex by insecure housing, frequent involvement with the criminal justice system, including incarceration. Many struggle with mental health disorders that go untreated. Standard addiction and obstetrical care have offered limited success. Partnerships between the addiction providers and obstetricians offers some opportunity for improving outcomes. This session will provide a summary of the literature related to methamphetamine use in pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Additionally, recommendations for prenatal and addiction care for pregnant and postpartum individuals will be examined and the models of integrated care that may prove useful for future investigation will be discussed. This area is ripe for innovation and radical redesign of services.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to describe the complications of pregnancy that result from the use of methamphetamines in pregnancy.
2. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to describe addiction outcomes associated with pregnancy in women with methamphetamine use disorder.
3. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify elements of prenatal and addiction care that might provide greater success in the future.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn a maximum of 1 MOC point in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
