Gaming Disorder 101: How to Distinguish Passion from Problem

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference reviews the current evidence behind best practices for identification and treatment of gaming disorder.
Gaming disorder is a condition recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is included in the ICD-11. While gaming disorder is increasingly discussed in popular media, it is often done so without a strong scientific underpinning. This session provides a review of current evidence behind best practices for gaming disorder identification, treatment, prevalence, and risk factors associated with gaming disorder development.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Define five risk factors for gaming disorder
- Identify at-risk gamers with validated screening tools
- Apply harm reduction and treatment strategies for problematic gaming

Dr. Emily Brunner is an addiction medicine physician currently practicing at Sage Prairie, an outpatient addiction medicine clinic in Eagan, Minnesota. Dr. Brunner received a B.S. in neuroscience at MIT, followed by attending the University of Michigan for medical school and family practice residency. She became board certified in addiction medicine in 2014 via the practice pathway, and worked at Hazelden Betty Ford foundation for 2 years in the outpatient setting, followed by working for several years in a community hospital setting which had an inpatient cd treatment program. Dr. Brunner enjoys teaching residents and med students, and has a strong passion for helping mentor primary care physicians in adding addiction medicine services to their practice. Dr. Brunner has also been involved in ASAM at multiple levels, including as treasurer and president of the Minnesota branch of ASAM, and will be starting a role as regional director for Region VI in 2021. She is also very interested in advocacy for patients, and helping to reduce stigma at the community level and eliminate barriers for treatment of addiction as a chronic disease.
Cam Adair is the founder of Game Quitters, a support community for gamers from 95 countries. An international speaker and entrepreneur, he is widely hailed as a leading expert on video game addiction. In 2020, Cam launched the INTENTA Gaming Disorder Clinical Training. His work has been published in Psychiatry Research, reported in government hearings, and been featured in New York Times Magazine, Forbes, BBC, NPR, CNN and more. In 2017, he was named one of Canada's Leaders in Mental Health.
