Overview

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference addresses key advances in emergency department care of people who use drugs and alcohol based on the experience of the CA Bridge Centers of Excellence.

This highly interactive session is focused on how emergency departments can innovate in addiction care. Presenters will take a practical approach to implementation of ED buprenorphine in the fentanyl era, treatment of alcohol and stimulant use disorder, and harm reduction in ED settings. The session will feature clinicians from across California, and share preliminary findings from the California Bridge Centers of Excellence quality improvement group. Participants will access practical toolkits and handouts that will allow them to implement at their own facilities.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, System Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. describe a protocol for ED initiation of medications for alcohol use disorder.
  2. propose two interventions that can reduce the risk of overdose for patients in the ED.
  3. describe options for buprenorphine initiation in the setting of fentanyl use in a patient in withdrawal.

Hannah Snyder

MD

Hannah Snyder, MD practices primary care and addiction medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. She is a co-principal investigator of the statewide California Bridge Project. Through this program, she supports acute care hospitals in offering low barrier buprenorphine starts and linkage to ongoing treatment.
She completed Medical School at the University of Chicago, residency in Family and Community Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and a fellowship in Primary Care Addiction Medicine at UCSF. Her clinical work includes addiction consultation in clinic and in the hospital, primary care, and hospital medicine. At ZSFG, Dr. Snyder is the Director of the Bridge Clinic, a low-barrier addiction treatment program focused on patients transitioning from acute care to the community.

Arianna D. Campbell

PA-C

Arianna Campbell, PA-C is an Emergency Department PA with more than 20 years of clinical experience. She is an ED APP Lead for US Acute Care Solutions at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville, California. She has been involved in developing programs to initiate high quality, evidence based treatment for addiction in the ED and hospital setting since 2017. She is a founding member of California Bridge and is currently serving as Director and Co Principal Investigator.

Aimee Moulin

MD, MAS

Dr. Aimee Moulin is a Professor at UC Davis with a dual appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry. Dr. Moulin is Co-Investigator of the California Bridge Project dedicated to advancing 24/7 high-quality access to treatment for people with substance use disorders. She is Past-President of the California American College of Emergency Physicians during which she advocated to expand access to care for people with mental illness and substance use disorders and secured support for ED-based peer Substance Use Navigators. Dr. Moulin completed a fellowship in Quality Safety and Comparative Effectiveness through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality with a focus on acute care for patients with substance use and mental illness.

Elizabeth Jane Johnson

MD

Hi! My name is Elizabeth Johnson. I am an emergency medicine physician. I finished residency at UC Davis in 2021. I am currently the first addiction medicine fellow at UC Davis. I am interested in harm reduction as well as finding creative ways to deliver care to vulnerable populations. This is my first ASAM conference.
