This 60-minute, on-demand session from the ASAM 2021 Review Course provides answers to the top questions asked during Faculty presentations covering Genetics and Gender, Pain and Addiction and Patient Interventions, and gives insights into the Board Exam.
This panel session will provide a prime opportunity for learners to get their questions answered on topics that were presented on the final day of the ASAM Review Course.

The target audience for this introductory and intermediate level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting
- Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals
- Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders
- Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient
- Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse

Leslie Hayes, MD, works for El Centro Family Health in Espanola, NM. She is board-certified in both addiction and family medicine. While Dr. Hayes enjoys all aspects of family medicine, her particular passion is taking care of people with opioid use disorder. She especially enjoys working with pregnant women and new mothers who have had drug problems and works hard to make sure that they and their babies receive compassionate and appropriate medical care. She got much of her training in substance use disorders through Project ECHO and now considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to give back to Project ECHO, and she now provides training for other providers around the state of New Mexico and nationally in substance use disorder and use of buprenorphine. She recently started an ECHO in her own organization with the goal of getting 90% of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine and provide compassionate, evidence-based care for Substance Use Disorder. She was named a White House Champion of Change in April of 2016 for her work with substance use disorder and pregnancy. Her work was also featured in The Providers, an award-winning documentary about rural health care.

Edwin A. Salsitz
Edwin A. Salsitz, MD, DFASAM has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee. Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

MD, DFAPA, FASAM
Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Paul H. Earley
Paul H. Earley, MD, DFASAM has worked in Addiction Medicine for 35 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment, treatment, and management of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a dynamic speaker and educator; he speaks and trains on topics of addiction, its treatment and addiction among health care professionals. In addition, he trains therapists about the neurobiological basis of psychotherapy. In his travels, he has provided training in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Iceland and Switzerland. He is the author of three books and numerous research articles on addiction and its treatment. His two most recent books, RecoveryMind Training and the RecoveryMind Training Implementation Guide describe an innovative and comprehensive system designed to reengineer addiction treatment. He is a contributing author to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Textbook: Principles of Addiction Medicine, as author of the chapter: Physician Health Programs and Addiction among Physicians and a contributing author to the ASAM Criteria. His work was featured in the documentary series on addiction entitled Close to Home by Bill Moyers. Dr. Earley is the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He is the Medical Director of the Georgia Professionals Health Program, Inc., the Physicians Health Program (PHP) for the state of Georgia and the Immediate Past President of the North American Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP). With Earley Consultancy, LLC, he works with treatment facilities, providing training in cohesive care, treatment effectiveness and staff development using RecoveryMind Training.

Abigail J. Herron (Moderator)
DO, FAPA, DFASAM
Abigail J. Herron, DO, is the Vice President of Behavioral Health and the Director of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at the Institute for Family Health. She is board certified in adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine, and is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. Dr. Herron is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She graduated from Wesleyan University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Herron completed her psychiatry residency at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals, where she was also chief resident, and a clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her academic interests include integrated care, women’s health, and medical education. She is the co-editor of the Addiction Casebook, and the editor-in-chief of ASAM’s Essentials of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Herron is also in private practice in New York.
