Changing the Focus: Envisioning Alcohol Use Through a Harm Reduction Lens

Recorded: Thursday, March 31, 2022 - Sunday, April 3, 2022
On-Demand Session

Overview

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference focuses on practical harm reduction strategies, for multiple care settings, to engage persons who are using alcohol.

Alcohol-related death is the third most preventable cause of death in the United States. Historically, the medical field has viewed abstinence as the primary goal when addressing alcohol-related problems. However, approaches that focus on abstinence are at risk of excluding persons who may benefit from education on strategies to mitigate risks associated with alcohol use. This session will review practical strategies that reduce harm related to alcohol use. Participants will gain practical skills through small group, case-based discussions that demonstrate feasibility of implementing harm-reduction strategies to improve the health of persons using alcohol.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, System Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify alcohol use as a condition that can benefit from harm reduction approaches.
  2. List at least 3 practical strategies that can be employed to help persons using alcohol reduce their risk.
  3. Describe inequities in access and prescribing of medications for alcohol use disorder.
