CCBHC ECHO Session: Co-Occurring Disorders

Overview

According to the Fourth Edition of the ASAM Criteria all programs should be co-occurring capable at a minimum. Making the treatment of co-occurring conditions an expectation, not an exception for all behavioral health and medical professionals. How programs define and discuss co-occurring care, including an overview of how to diagnose complex symptoms and deliver care from an interdisciplinary focus will be explored. In this session we will analyze pharmacotherapy and therapeutic best practices for the treatment of substance use disorders and mental health conditions and decision making strategies. We will take a deep dive into understanding the unique community barriers and successes when integrating care practices and take a look at key elements of co-occurring capabilities. 

CCBHC-E NTTAC has partnered with ASAM to provide a 6-session CCBHC ECHO on substance use. This 1.5-hour, virtual ECHO series offers a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of actual patient cases submitted by attendees. Participants can look forward to receiving guidance and feedback from a diverse panel of expert faculty. This program is tailored for professionals new to the field of addiction treatment, providing them with the means to enhance their knowledge, skills, and confidence. This introductory program is specifically designed for CCBHC grant recipients, including social workers, therapists, and additional clinical team members involved in patient care. Each ECHO session includes:

• A 30-minute presentation focused on a selected topic related to addiction.
• Two 20-minute interactive case discussions led by a team of interdisciplinary addiction experts.
• The opportunity to earn up to 1.5 continuing education (CE) credits for each session

This introductory program is specifically designed for CCBHC grant recipients, including social workers, therapists, and additional clinical team members involved in patient care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Define and discuss co-occurring care, including an overview of making a diagnosis. 
2. Analyze evidence and best practices for co-occurring care (pharmacotherapy and therapeutic).
3. Understand the unique community barriers and successes when integrating care practices.

Physicians

The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses

This activity awards 1.5 Nursing contact hours.

PAs

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for  1.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. 

Social Workers

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, ASAM is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.

IPCE Credit

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 1.5 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7062. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The American Society of Addiction Medicine is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) or Continuing Certification Programs (CCP)

This activity meets the requirements for MOC/CCP for the following primary physician boards and for state licensing CME requirements. MOC Credit is only reported for ABA, ABP, ABIM, and ABS.
