Buprenorphine Mini Course:
Building on Federal Prescribing Guidance
Presented by ASAM in collaboration with the AMA and Shatterproof
This mini course for medical providers, clinicians, and students reviews prescribing buprenorphine to patients with opioid use disorder and is presented by ASAM in collaboration with the American Medical Association (AMA) and Shatterproof.
This module expands on the SAMHSA Buprenorphine Quick Start Guide. Utilizing the chronic care framework of addiction treatment, this fully on-demand module offers practical considerations for buprenorphine initiation, dosing, and ongoing patient management. Further, through interactive and application-focused learning, participants will explore the core principles of opioid use disorder treatment and the importance of language when treating patients with this condition.
Please Note: That recent legislation has removed the waiver requirement to prescribe buprenorphine. Some of the course content and descriptions refer to the waiver and we appreciate your patience as we work to update this content. The target audience for this introductory level activity includes prescribers seeking to initiate buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Examine the core principles of opioid use disorder treatment through the chronic disease framework of addiction
- Explore safe buprenorphine prescribing recommendations, guidance, and implementation strategies for new prescribers
- Identify best practices and clinical considerations for buprenorphine initiation, stabilization, dosing, treatment, and discontinuation
- Examine recommendations for ongoing patient management, monitoring, engagement, and care
DEA Education Requirement
As an accredited organization in Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, ASAM certifies that completion of this course meets 1 hours of the DEA requirement for 8 hours of education on substance use disorder(s).

Yngvild K. Olsen, MD, MPH, DFASAM graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1997, from the residency training program in internal medicine at Boston Medical Center in 2000, and from the Fellowship in General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2001. Dr. Olsen also serves as the Medical Director of the Institutes for Behavior Resources Inc/REACH Health Services in Baltimore City. Dr. Olsen currently serves as Vice President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and is a member of the Public Policy Committee. She is the Immediate Past President of the Maryland Society of Addiction Medicine, Immediate Past President of the Maryland Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, and a Board member of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence-MD (NCADD-MD).

Melissa Weimer, DO, MCR, DFASAM is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. At Yale, she also serves as the Medical Director of the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service and Associate Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Weimer has a clinical and research focus on expanding access to treatment for patients with substance use disorders, particularly in the hospital setting. She also has fellowship training and years of experience in the management of complex pain, particularly for patients with concomitant opioid use disorders.
