The ASAM Review Course in Addiction Medicine is the essential and foundational course for physicians who are preparing for the addiction medicine exam or for a career in addiction medicine. With a comprehensive curriculum, covering everything from neurobiology and pharmacology to individual substances and ethical concerns, the course offers a streamlined overview of addiction medicine delivered by an outstanding faculty lineup.
The target audience for this introductory and intermediate-level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This activity addresses all 6 ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting
Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals
Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders
Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient
Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse

As an accredited organization named in Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, ASAM certifies that completion of this course meets the DEA requirement for 8 hours of education on substance use disorder(s).

Ricardo Restrepo
MD, MPH
Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

Lewis Nelson

Lewis Nelson, MD, FACEP, FACMT, DFASAM is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a Past-President of the American College of Medical Toxicology. He remains actively involved with the CDC, FDA, DHS, and several professional medical organizations, including ASAM. Annie Levesque, MD, MSc, FASAM is the Medical Director of the Opioid Treatment Program at the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West. She is also the Associate Director of the Fellowship in Addiction Medicine Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Leslie Hayes, MD

Dr. Leslie Hayes, MD, works for El Centro Family Health in Espanola, NM. She is board-certified in both addiction and family medicine. While Dr. Hayes enjoys all aspects of family medicine, her particular passion is taking care of people with opioid use disorder. She especially enjoys working with pregnant women and new mothers who have had drug problems and works hard to make sure that they and their babies receive compassionate and appropriate medical care. She got much of her training in substance use disorders through Project ECHO and now considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to give back to Project ECHO, and she now provides training for other providers around the state of New Mexico and nationally in substance use disorder and use of buprenorphine. She recently started an ECHO in her own organization with the goal of getting 90% of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine and provide compassionate, evidence-based care for Substance Use Disorder. She was named a White House Champion of Change in April of 2016 for her work with substance use disorder and pregnancy. Her work was also featured in The Providers, an award-winning documentary about rural health care.

Jonathan Avery
MD
Jonathan Avery, MD is currently the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Avery teaches addiction psychiatry to the Weill Cornell medical students and residents of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been published on a broad variety of topics in psychiatry, including papers on subjects ranging from clinician attitudes towards patients to how to use buprenorphine. He is the founder of the Addiction Stigma Institute that studies stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders and creates novel interventions to improve these stigmatizing attitudes. He was on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor of the books Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. He has won numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

Dr. Mason Turner is the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health for Intermountain Health based in Salt Lake City, UT and Denver, CO. His leadership in mental health care focuses on the development and evolution of strategic innovations in behavioral health care delivery that enhance quality of care and clinical excellence and are guided by principles of equity and inclusion of the patient/consumer voice into all aspects of the behavioral health ecosystem. Including integration initiatives which link mental health care and addiction medicine services with both primary and specialty medical care, as well as supporting innovative technological means of reaching patients for treatment of behavioral health conditions, he is also committed to enhancing access for behavioral health care services to all those who need it. Additionally, he has extensive experience in promoting employee health and well-being in a variety of corporate and healthcare sectors. As a clinician, he specializes in addiction medicine, consult-liaison psychiatry and treatment of personality disorders. He has received extensive training in resiliency-and systems-based approaches for improving the mental health and well-being of refugees, asylum seekers and torture survivors. Dr. Turner also served as a former Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco Medical School, where he taught medical students at all levels the practice of interviewing patients and clinical reasoning skills. He also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Turner earned his AB degree in psychology from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, and completed his MD degree at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center/ Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School through Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, in Boston, MA, with additional training in psychotherapy at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies at Massachusetts General Hospital and addiction psychiatry at McLean Hospital. Petros Levounis
MD, MA, DFASAM
Petros Levounis, MD, MA, DFASAM serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Professional Development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Levounis came to Rutgers from Columbia University where he served as director of the Addiction Institute of New York from 2002 to 2013.
Dr. Levounis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University where he studied chemistry and biophysics before receiving his medical education at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he researched the effects of social class on patient-physician relationships in Oxford, England, and received an MA degree in sociology from Stanford. In 1994, he moved to New York City to train in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia earning the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award and went on to complete his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at New York University.
Dr. Levounis has written numerous articles, monographs, and book chapters; has lectured extensively on addiction topics throughout the United States and abroad; and has been interviewed by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, The Martha Stewart Radio Show, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.
Dr. Levounis has served on the boards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and from 2005 to 2009 chaired the national Committee on Addiction Treatment of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Levounis is a Betty Ford Scholar, a recipient of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists’ Distinguished Service Award and the ASAM Educator of the Year Award, and a distinguished fellow of the APA and ASAM. In 2017, he was elected as an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Levounis has published thirteen books including the self-help paperback “Sober Siblings: How to Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister—and Not Lose Yourself,” the textbook of “Substance Dependence and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders,” “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice,” “The Behavioral Addictions,” “Becoming Mindful,” “Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health,” and “Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder,” now in its second edition. Dr. Levounis is currently working on the first textbook of Technological Addictions. His books have been translated into French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Levounis is married to actor Lukas Hassel and lives in New York City.

Eve Lasswell

Eve Lasswell, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who treats adults with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Dr. Lasswell is part of UC San Diego Health's Addiction Recovery and Treatment Services, which uses a harm-reduction approach to provide care for all stages of recovery from substance use disorders. She treats patients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders and helps adults recover from addiction by encouraging behaviors that build wellness and emotional resilience.
In addition, she has experience helping people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, as well as concerns related to role transitions and interpersonal relationships.
Dr. Lasswell also has experience providing care to diverse patient populations, including those with ethnic backgrounds different from her own, LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual) individuals, and current and former members of the US military.
Her research aims to improve outcomes for people with substance use disorders and improving access to mental health services for the underserved.
Dr. Lasswell completed a postdoctoral fellowship in addiction treatment at Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at Indiana State University.

Paul Earley

Dr. Paul Earley has been an Addiction Medicine Physician for 36 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment and treatment of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long-term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM and has been on the board of ASAM for over 20 years in several capacities. He has been the Medical Director of two nationally acclaimed addiction programs specializing in healthcare professionals who suffer from addiction illnesses. Edwin Salsitz

Dr. Edwin A. Salsitz has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel , Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee.
Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

Overview
This 25-minute, on-demand session from the ASAM 2025 Review Course covers the history of addiction treatment, the current definition of addiction and the ASAM Criteria as a critical tool for standardizing evidence-based care.
Approaches to describing and treating addiction have changed dramatically over the years. This session will begin by presenting a brief history of addiction treatment, focusing on the lessons learned from each approach. Next, the presenter will review the current definition of addiction and its importance in directing modern policy and treatment. Paul Earley
MD, DFASAM
Dr. Paul Earley has been an Addiction Medicine Physician for 36 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment and treatment of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long-term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM and has been on the board of ASAM for over 20 years in several capacities. He has been the Medical Director of two nationally acclaimed addiction programs specializing in healthcare professionals who suffer from addiction illnesses. Currently, Dr. Earley is the Medical Director of the Georgia Professionals Health Program, Inc., the Physicians Health Program (PHP) for the state of Georgia in the U.S. With Earley Consultancy, LLC, he works with numerous treatment facilities, providing training in cohesive care, treatment effectiveness, and staff development.

Edwin Salsitz
MD, DFASAM
Dr. Edwin A. Salsitz has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel , Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee.
Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

Petros Levounis
MD, MA, DFASAM
Petros Levounis, MD, MA, DFASAM serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Professional Development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Levounis came to Rutgers from Columbia University where he served as director of the Addiction Institute of New York from 2002 to 2013.
Dr. Levounis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University where he studied chemistry and biophysics before receiving his medical education at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he researched the effects of social class on patient-physician relationships in Oxford, England, and received an MA degree in sociology from Stanford. In 1994, he moved to New York City to train in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia earning the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award and went on to complete his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at New York University.
Dr. Levounis has written numerous articles, monographs, and book chapters; has lectured extensively on addiction topics throughout the United States and abroad; and has been interviewed by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, The Martha Stewart Radio Show, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.
Dr. Levounis has served on the boards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and from 2005 to 2009 chaired the national Committee on Addiction Treatment of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Levounis is a Betty Ford Scholar, a recipient of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists’ Distinguished Service Award and the ASAM Educator of the Year Award, and a distinguished fellow of the APA and ASAM. In 2017, he was elected as an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Levounis has published thirteen books including the self-help paperback “Sober Siblings: How to Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister—and Not Lose Yourself,” the textbook of “Substance Dependence and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders,” “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice,” “The Behavioral Addictions,” “Becoming Mindful,” “Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health,” and “Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder,” now in its second edition. Dr. Levounis is currently working on the first textbook of Technological Addictions. His books have been translated into French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Levounis is married to actor Lukas Hassel and lives in New York City.

Ricardo Restrepo
MD, MPH
Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York.
Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee.
Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005.
Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

MD
Soteri Polydorou, MD is a practicing physician with board certifications in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine. His involvement in the field of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and education include serving as Medical Director of Addiction Services for Northwell Health and Associate Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Northwell Health is a regional health system of over 20 hospitals and nearly 800 outpatient facilities. Dr. Polydorou is a member of various governmental and professional committees tasked with supporting the delivery and organization of addiction treatment. Dr. Polydorou’s interests include public policy initiatives to address substance use disorders, optimizing access to SUD services within health systems, and implementation of innovative opioid use disorder treatments within various healthcare clinical settings.

Overview
This 35-minute, on-demand session from the ASAM 2025 Review Course covers the history of the opioid epidemic, guidelines and effectiveness of opioid therapy and treatment options for both opioid use disorders and chronic pain.
The complex overlap of pain and addiction presents several public health and clinical challenges. This session will review the evolution of the prescription opioid epidemic, which led to the heroin and fentanyl epidemics. The presenter will then review data and clinical practice guidelines regarding the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain and the effectiveness of opioid therapy. Participants will also learn about options to simultaneously treat opioid use disorder and chronic pain.
The target audience for this introductory and intermediate-level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Edwin Salsitz
MD, DFASAM
Dr. Edwin A. Salsitz has been an attending physician in the Mount Sinai Beth Israel , Division of Chemical Dependency, New York City, since 1983, and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is the principal investigator of the Methadone Medical Maintenance (office-based methadone maintenance) research project. Dr. Salsitz is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, as well as by the Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He has published and lectures frequently on addiction medicine topics.
Dr. Salsitz is a course director for ASAM sponsored Buprenorphine and REMS Opioid trainings, and is a lead mentor in the PCSS-MAT mentoring program. He has co-chaired the ASAM Review Course, the ASAM Common Threads Course, the ASAM State of the Art course and is a reviewer for the Journal of Addiction Medicine and Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He is the chair of the ASAM REMS course on safe and effective prescribing of opioids. Dr. Salsitz was the Co-chair of the ASAM CME committee and Chair of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine CME and Education committee.
Dr. Salsitz is a member of the medical advisory panel, for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Salsitz is the recipient of the 2014 ASAM Annual Award, and the 2018 ASAM Annual Educator of the Year Award.

Jonathan Avery
MD
Jonathan Avery, MD is currently the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Avery teaches addiction psychiatry to the Weill Cornell medical students and residents of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been published on a broad variety of topics in psychiatry, including papers on subjects ranging from clinician attitudes towards patients to how to use buprenorphine. He is the founder of the Addiction Stigma Institute that studies stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders and creates novel interventions to improve these stigmatizing attitudes. He was on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor of the books Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. He has won numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

Mashal Khan, MD
Attending of Clinical Psychiatry
NewYork Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell
Dr. Mashal Khan is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine-NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He attended the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University and trained at Maimonides Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Following his residency training, he completed a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Khan works along with the the Liver transplant team and focuses on improving outcomes for individuals with alcohol use disorder and related liver disease.
