Overview

This 1-hour virtual-live webinar cover professional practice gaps of addiction specialist physicians and other practitioners seeking guidance about existing billing codes that may be used to bill for services provided to patients with substance use disorder (SUD).

This webinar will cover information contained in the Reimbursement for Medications for Addiction Treatment Toolkit, information on final changes to opioid treatment programs (OTP) and relevant telehealth offerings in the Medicare program for calendar year (CY) 2022, case studies, billing guidance, as well as best practices.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other practitioners who treat and bill for insurance for patients with a substance use disorder either in-person or through telehealth.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of codes available to bill for treatment of a SUD.
  2. Describe the federal changes to telehealth policies in outpatient and OTP treatment programs.
  3. Explain federal Medicaid policies around the treatment of SUD using telehealth.
  4. Describe alternative payment model arrangements indicated for treating SUD.
  5. Identify strategies for addressing issues related to the payment of claims for the treatment of SUD.

Joel V. Brill, MD FACP is an executive clinician with over 30 years of experience providing strategic leadership and medical oversight to large data-driven health organizations. Dr. Brill is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and works extensively with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) on coding, coverage and reimbursement issues, and co-Chaired the Part D medication measures Technical Expert Panel for CMS.  Dr. Brill is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Midwestern University.  He participates in the CPT Editorial Panel and the AMA RBRVS Update Committee (RUC) and has introduced over 200 HCPCS and CPT coding proposals.  He has published extensively on episode and bundled payment methodologies and has developed and submitted advanced payment models to the HHS Physician Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee for consideration under MACRA.
