Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the different types and current incidence and prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and their social and economic impact.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD) are the leading cause of preventable intellectual disabilities in the Western World. Given the profound consequences associated with FASD, a broad range of strategies in the education about and diagnosis, treatment and prevention of FASD is imperative. This workship will provide a framework to help professionals become educated in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of FASD and serve as advocates for these patients and their families.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the different types and current incidence and prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and their social and economic impact.
  2. Compare the most common presenting symptoms of FASD, ADHD, ODD and autism and use this information to better identify FASD in treatment settings and to consider the role of stigma and misogyny when screening for prenatal alcohol use.
  3. Examine and discuss diagnostic, educational and treatment resources for providers, patients and families.

Sherry Nykiel, MD

Behavioral Health Medical Director

Delaware Department of Health and Social Services

Sherry Nykiel, MD is psychiatrist specializing in general and addiction psychiatry in Media, PA and is the founder and CEO of Justus Mental Health, a psychiatric services organization providing education, consultation and clinical services. She received her medical degree from University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, completed the Massachusetts General/McLean Hospitals/Harvard School of Medicine Adult Psychiatry Residency and the Mass General Brigham/Harvard School of Medicine Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Her clinical expertise includes the treatment of co-occurring borderline personality disorders and substance use disorders, trauma and opioid use disorders including the use of buprenorphine. She has extensive administrative and program development expertise having served as the Medical Director of McLean Fernside, Boston Medical Center Outpatient Psychiatry, Boston Public Health Commission Behavioral Health Services, First Steps Treatment Center at Crozer Keystone and as the Chief of Addiction Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services. In addition to her private practice, she also currently serves as the Behavioral Health Medical Director for the Delaware Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance.

Omar Shah, MD

Psychiatrist

Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School

Dr. Omar Shah is an adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist. He currently serves as full time faculty at the Harvard Medical School and as a psychiatrist at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is a Ruth Fox Scholar of ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) and a recipient of the AAAP (American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry) John Renner Award. He served as the Vice Chair of the APA (American Psychiatric Association) Leadership Fellowship and was recently awarded the APA Resident Recognition Award. He completed his adult psychiatry training at the Delaware Psychiatry Residency Program, his child and adolescent psychiatry training at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, and a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Shah is interested in working with patients with complex psychosocial burdens, and families with substance use.

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
