Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses ALD, its treatment challenges, our experiences treating these patients in a multidisciplinary clinic, and addiction treatment specific to this patient population.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) has become the leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in the US. Unfortunately, few pharmacological advances have been made in treating these patients. In this session, you will meet members of an alcohol-related liver disease multidisciplinary clinic. We will aim to familiarize attendees with ALD, its treatment challenges, our experiences treating these patients in a multidisciplinary clinic, and addiction treatment specific to this patient population. The session intends to be clinically focused and evidence-based.

The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  2. explain the challenges in treating alcohol use disorder with alcohol related liver disease.
  3. use specific addiction treatments for patients with alcohol related liver disease and alcohol use disorder.

Dr. Akhil Anand is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist who co-leads Cleveland Clinic's Alcohol Drug and Recovery Center's Inpatient Chemical Dependency unit and is the co-medical director of Cleveland Clinic's Multidisciplinary Alcohol Program Liver Clinic. In addition, he serves as the University Hospital's Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program Director, Cleveland's only Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Shreya Sengupta, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She is the Medical Director of the Multidisciplinary Alcohol Program at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed medical education at the University of Illinois in Chicago, residency at the University of Chicago, and gastroenterology and transplant hepatology fellowship at the University of Michigan. She is the Quality Improvement Officer for the Section of Hepatology in the Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Meghan Reagan is a Licensed Independent Social Worker in the state of Ohio. She is an integral member of the multidisciplinary alcohol program clinic at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. With a background in Child Welfare, Healthcare, and Alcohol and Drug Treatment, her career expands over several areas of how individuals and families are affected by alcohol and drug use. She is passionate about helping her clients learn the strategies they need to succeed no matter their social and medical circumstances.
