About the Course

The ASAM Motivational Interviewing Essentials Course will allow you to practice motivational interviewing (MI) skills in a fully online setting. The course is designed to help clinicians articulate the approach of motivational interviewing and apply it to conversations to promote positive change.  The modules are designed to allow for practice of skills consistent with motivational interviewing behaviors, while reflecting on how to employ these skills in their clinical settings. 

What You'll Learn 

After taking this course, learners will be able to: 

  1. Articulate and enact the spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI).  
  2. Identify the core features of MI congruent interactions.  
  3. Organize clinical communications attending to the four foundational tasks of MI (engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning)  
  4. Recognize change talk and apply the basic MI skills of open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries to selectively reinforce change talk
