Unusual Clues: Hidden Presentations of Substance Use Disorders Across Clinical Disciplines

Recorded: Thursday, April 23, 2026 to Sunday, April 26, 2026
On-Demand Session

Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses hidden presentations of substance use disorders across clinical disciplines, including adolescent, dermatologic, and nutritional manifestations.

Hidden clues reveal big insights. Participants will gain practical, cross-disciplinary skills to recognize and diagnose subtle signs of addiction in patients and to integrate culturally informed, equitable care into their practice.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Teams and Teamwork.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply an adolescent-specific framework to assess and manage substance use disorders in adolescents and young adults, with a focus on immigrant stress and acculturation
  2. Recognize and manage dermatologic manifestations of substance use disorders across a variety of skin tones
  3. Identify and correct nutritional deficits in people with substance use disorders by interpreting the signs and symptoms of those deficits
